"I can't buy 'em for that much ..."
Don't you hate it when a dealer with badly overpriced "product" uses that line in response to your offer?
It just happened to me this morning at a local show. It reminded of why I have grown to prefer buying on eBay.

Because everyone knows that nothing shady ever happens on ebay.
almost every human transaction. Some one on this
Forum said it best, "Cut the BS, just tell me the price".
I believe that statement says it all.

<< <i>Question---How can you tell when a coin dealer is lying?
Answer---His lips are moving.
Terrific.
Perry, what do you do for a living?
honest and totally above board in all of their dealings. It
is also more then possible, for a collector to be a lying,
deceitful and altogether despicable wretch. Good people,
as well as bad people, can come in all kinds of containers.

"My buy price is higher than that."
And I mean it. If the buyer wants to offer me the coin at the price he has bid, I will buy it without hesitation. I don't say this unless it is true.

That was a bit mean spirited so I deleted it. If you really want to know, I'm a retired Geotechnical Engineer.

And it's my experience that engineers rarely lie. It's just not their nature.
It was nice of you to delete it as it was a bit of a mean spirited chuckle - but we all ARE friends here, right?

Right!!! I actually hold CCU, Julian, Charmy, Rick Snow, and all the other dealers that contribute to the CU Coin Forum in very high regard.

You're not alone, nobody can!
I have you all beat, I'm a Used Car Manager!
Some coins, especially the ones I collect, often bring multiples of sheet.
And we do get the same thing.. had a customer offer $10k on an 07 Corolla with 19k miles. I literally can't buy them for that much less run em through the shop, certify em, etc. My words were "I appreciate the offer but I am currently paying closer to $12,000 for cars like this" to which the customer (Who was a snert to begin with) claimed that he can buy them all day long, certified, for $10k. I offered him a $1,000 finder's fee for each clean title, paintwork free 07 Corolla LE with 20k miles on it that I could buy for $10k.
Weird, he didn't take me up on the offer....

Yeah, I'm pretty sure folks of their caliber are pretty clearly not the kind of dealers whose ethics are sometimes called into question here.

Agree. The dealers that participate here have worked long and hard to earn a reputation for fair and honest dealing and wouldn't do anything to damage their good names.

You're thinking of Geologists which is a totally different profession. But, nice try.

The above used to bother me but know i could care less. It took me a while but i finally accepted that coin collecting was not the wholsome hobby that i thought i was getting into. Yes the bulk is top notch but even then there can be issues. When money is involved, KNOWLEDGE CAN BE your best ally.
Nothing is fair and i guess it does not need to be for the world to go round.
On a airplane with 200 people very few pay the same fare. Every field and profession has the same types of issues.
KNOWLEDGE IS KING
Last week i needed a CV axle for my sons car, I had my son call and was quoted 268 dollars, i called and mentioned the name of a body shop my friend owns, price was now 165 and change. I called a few autopart stores, 99 to 159 dollars. Now my intrest was peaked and i did some more checking. I found some places to rebuild the one i had, 69 to 100 dollars. I stumbled upon a company in the middle of no where and bought a 100 percent BRAND NEW CV axle for 67 bucks and 12 for shipping. That is a pretty big difference. Everyday i have to deal with things like this, broken commodes, broken A/C's, insurance, health etc.

The current spot price of silver is $16.18
My reply was , if i factor in Ebay fees, paypal fees, grade fees, shipping fees--and toss in any other fee you can think of, I would be an idiot to sell it to you at your offer. Id be better off selling to a local coin store--I hear they are buying at $13 an ounce--and I dont have to ship it. Since Im not an idiot--most of the time--I declined his offer and also mentioned perhaps he should refrain from buying anything from me in the future.
They don't wanna pay retail so I am not going to pay them anything either.
<< <i>I had a PCGS MS69 1st Strike--with spots--noted in the auction-and I priced it under latest Ebay completed sales becase of the spots. They are more like fly spots than the dreaeded milk spots--but a spots a spot. So a guy offered me $15. for it. I also always offer free shipping.

IMHO, belittling a potential customer like that is NOT something to be proud of, regardless of how "ridiculous" his offer may have seemed to you. It was probably just some average Joe who couldn't afford much, and was just hoping to get lucky and pick up an ounce of silver on the cheap, which, in the whole scheme of things, is not totally unreasonable. But rather than be polite and simply say "no thank you" or reply with a reasonable counter-offer, you took it upon yourself to dump on him.
Not cool.
