A most awesome double profile - 1834 large cent!

I bought this large cent at the most recent LB show from Tom Reynolds, who always seems to have an awesome inventory of nice coppper. This was one of his favorites on the doubled profile. Even my non-collector better half was impressed. I also took these pictures with a new Canon D10 12 MP camera, so i'm still playing with some of the settings.

I didn't pay any big premium on this coin, it's a VF-25 sharpness, net VF-20 EAC grade. Apparently the doubled profiles do occur in some of the 1830's cents. This one is labled N-2 1/2, (a sense of humor from Tom), since it appears to be between an N-2 and N-3, and has an R-1 on the paper envelope. Maybe this one is a bit scarcer, but I'm not sure. Either way it has a lot more personality (or personalities) than many other 1834 cents.

Thanks for the compliments on this bizarre cent! My wife showed this thread at her work (no collectors there) and her co-workers got blown away by this example. Didn't take them long to see the double faces and especially the two pairs of lips! Maybe it will ignit some interest out there, who knows?

Maybe some copper experts can chime in and tell us if there are other examples like this, for 1834 or other years.

The double profiles are usually caused by planchet shifting around due to worn parts on the coinpress. They are reasonably common on bust half dollars--not as common on large cents.

Here is a half dollar that I am STILL trying to talk Zap out of 3 years after he beat me on ebay.
