Ebay makes another change...it's a grand-slam!!

Anyone check out ebay yet today?? ALL the baseball cards are in ONE category now: Baseball Cards...no sub categories and not even a split between Major league & Minor league.

I noticed this earlier today, as well. I was hoping it was some kind of bug in the system.

It appears that all store listings might have to be amended to fit the new categories.

    What a complete mess image

Categoreis?? There are only TWO categories for baseball cards now!! Baseball cards new or used!!!
  • I may be of the minority, but I still think the new system is way too specialized. I think ebay should go to one category for everything in the world- "Things".
  • Ebay executives are just like our political legislatures--they have nothing to do but sit around all day and get paid to come up with some new way to screw up the system!

If you can't come up with something truly innovative and beneficial then just leave it alone!

imagine all the keystrokes they could save by reducing it a letter and calling it "Stuff".

nah, they wouldn't do that. image

Ebay ..... when are they gonna do something BENEFICIAL to everyone instead of just doing needless and worthless changes that do nothing but hurt people?

There are people who search for things on ebay by categories?

I need to get out more. Or start collecting cards of a guy named Smith. Then maybe I would understand.
  • Its a mess!

    I just reported a "technical problem" to eBay . . .

"As an active buyer and seller on your site, today's consolidation of categories in the Sports Mem, Cards & Fan Shop will render the site (as a buyer and seller) completely useless. This incredibly poor business decision should be reversed immediately. eBay user = scotgreb"

Maybe if they get enough of these they will rethink this decision -- somehow I doubt it.

Move after move eBay seems to mess things up.
I guess when you have no viable competition you can do what you want & face no consequences

Just called eBay "Resolutions" at (866)643-3720 -- the service rep was very nice. (thx Claude for the # from Net 54)

She suggested reporting the problem as a "technical issue" via the web site as well as calling to report the complaint.

    From Net54 . . .

Thanks for taking the time to write to us.

We are aware of an issue with being unable to narrow down the search
results within Baseball Cards. This is not a permanent change and we
are working to resolve it as quickly as possible.

There are many changes in progress as part of the announced final seller
    release of the year.
    (http://www2.ebay.com/aw/core/200907270812462.html). These changes will
be rolling out during this week and are not yet complete.

As part of this release, the categories within Sports Trading Cards are
changing to the simplified set of sports that you see here:
    http://sports-cards.shop.ebay.com/Ca...i.html?_npmv=3

Previously, there was a duplication between the categories (eg
Baseball-MLB > Singles (Pre-1930) > Graded etc) and the Item Specifics
(Sport, Year, Graded, etc), which made it confusing on which to use to
narrow down the search results. Once you browsed to the Singles
(Pre-1930) category, you were still presented with the Year Item
Specifics. We are removing this duplication in favor of the more
    versatile Item Specifics.

Prior announcements about these changes can be found at the following
    links.

    http://pages.ebay.com/sell/July2009U...ies/index.html
    http://pages.ebay.com/sell/itemspecs.html
    http://pages.ebay.com/categorychanges/sportscards.html

When categories are changed, there is a reindexing of the items that
must occur, and this can take up to several days to complete. Once
complete, your items should be showing in the category:
Sports Mem, Card & Fan Shop > Cards > Baseball (category 213). Until
then, your items should still be found in all relevant title searches.

In addition to the previously available search refinements of Product,
Sport, Year, Card Manufacturer, Card Attributes and Grading information,
we will be adding the ability to refine search results by both Team and
    Player where applicable.

Once again our apologies for this issue and we ask for your patience as
    we work to resolve it.

    Sincerely,
    Mahina
    eBay Classification Team

<< <i>There are people who search for things on ebay by categories? >>

I don't think this change will impact anything. I bet most people search by keywords, not categories. A lot of sellers' items are put in the wrong categories, anyway.
  • storm888storm888 Posts: 11,701 ✭✭✭

    Chart of changes:

    http://pages.ebay.com/categorychanges/sportscards.html

    ............................................

EBAY says they KNOW that a small percentage of shoppers
use "specific categories" in their searches.

The modifiers used by most shoppers are sufficient to yield
the items they are looking for, when entered in "All Categories"
    or in a listed category.

    .......................

    1952 TOPPS Mantle PSA

will return the appropriate selection whether entered in

    All Categories

    or

Sports Mem, Cards & Fan Shop

    ..........................................................................

It has been many YEARS since I searched in the sub-cats. My
search-phrase and its modifiers take me where I want to go.

    ////////////////////////////////////////////

Doing a few tests, it seems that large sellers might be
somewhat advantaged by the change - due to volume
    returns and BestMatch.

But, if your buyer knows what he is looking for, he will
be able to find your listing under the new scheme.

You might be right . . . I generally start within a category and then use keywords.

Earlier today a search such as "1972 Topps" (within the category "Baseball") was only returning about 10 listings.

In hindsight, maybe it was just the indexing that was messed up.

I thought it was impossible for my opinion of eBay to sink any lower, but they've somehow done it again. Dropping categories one could browse in their entirety - or at least a day or two worth of listings at a time - makes no sense.

they made a weird change to the feedback I had to leave for a seller today as well
  • They could have waited till after the return change thing. Did 80% of mine the other day, now it doesn't want to let me edit them, possibly due to this?

One can still find what they want.

Example if you are looking for 1965 topps cards simply type in 1965 topps baseball cards.

You might have to look thru tons of raw if you are looking for PSA graded cards but all the 1965 topps cards will

    come up. (I think)

I tried 1965 topps psa baseball and got 6 hits.

I tried it the other way and got 300+

Glad I ain't selling on ebay at the moment that is for sure.

    Steve
    Good for you.

"..I tried 1965 topps psa baseball and got 6 hits.

I tried it the other way and got 300+ ..."

    /////////////////////////////

    In "all categories"

    The phrase

    1965 TOPPS PSA

    returned me

    555 items

    ........................

    I have been using "all cats" as my search for years;
regardless of the item I am hunting.

    ................

Folks who want to "just browse," can do that by just
    entering

    PSA

    or

    a players name.

    .....................

The "new" scheme seems likely to return more items,
    not fewer items.

I am not grasping the terms of the uproar, except that
BestMatch could/will further advantage the largest sellers.
(Which has really always been the case.)

They're already separated by sport so you wouldn't need to type in baseball. 1965 topps psa would suffice, or just 1965 psa unless there are a lot of other sets from '65. 1965 topps (gai, bvg, psa, sgc) should be enough to bring up all the graded 1965 topps cards.

For those who liked to browse, you can still accomplish the same thing. Ex: go to baseball, set to auctions ending within 24 hours, and type in (1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, etc) -(psa, bvg, bgs, gai, sgc) and you'll effectively get the same thing as with the singles 60's ungraded category. If you remove the - then you have the 60's graded category. Obviously, that doesn't work if sellers only use the last two digits of the year, but sellers rarely do that.

You can then bookmark the search so you don't have to type it in every time.

I can see where it would be a problem for those browing modern insert categories or something like that. That's much more difficult to duplicate with a search. I think you'd pretty much have to search by player, year, and/or grading company.
  • What a mess eBay has created for everyone, we are scrambling to fix our feeds we get from them to add their listings to VCP.

To make life easier for everyone we are going to add a section that will make it so you can search for the eBay listings we are tracking. Hope to have it available to you very shortly. Of course we only cover graded cards.

    Storm,

My concern started early this morning when broad searches were only returning a few items. Now that the indexing is back to normal it appears to be a fairly small event.

My only remaining question is determining whether a card is "new" or "used" image

I am totally against the idea of having just one category called "things" it is way more simple to have it called "stuff" Anyone who disagrees needs to have their head examined. Really simple math people.

I never looked at the pre-war sections much, but I can see where searching for all those sets would be a PITA. Before, those collectors could just go to the category and browse cards that were newly listed/ending recently/or whatever. Now they'd have to set up searches for every set, and the variety of sets makes that more cumbersome. Setting up a search that allows you to browse 60's topps cards, for instance, is MUCH easier.

Exactly. I do not use eBay as much as I once did - both as a buyer and as a seller - but the pre-1930 baseball category was one I still browsed with some regularity. I'm not sure how to duplicate such a broad assortment of years and manufacturers in a single search.

The only category searching I do is to limit a few of my searches to Sports Memorabilia, Cards, and Fan Shop, because those searches otherwise return a large percentage of false positives having nothing to do with sports collectibles. Otherwise, I just go by keywords.

Stephanie Tilenius Leaves eBay Under Reorganization

Stephanie Tilenius, eBay's head of global product and North America, is leaving the company, according to the company's corporate blog. She'll become an advisor to CEO John Donahoe for the next few months and plans to leave the company in early 2010.

According to the blog post, "Having been in her current role for two years, Stephanie says she felt that with eBay's turnaround under way, now was the right time for her to pursue other career ambitions, including opportunities to lead a company as CEO. Stephanie says she's proud of the progress the eBay team has made, and she believes eBay's best days are still ahead."

Stephanie's position will not be filled - Lorrie Norrington will assume direct responsibility for eBay North America, in addition to her role as the global head of eBay Marketplaces.

According to the blog, other changes are in the works, including the creation of a combined global product and technology team to be led by Mark Carges, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, and a combined seller and buyer organization responsible for ensuring a seamless end-to-end customer experience, led by Dinesh Lathi.

Yawie, now I understand a good example of why someone would use categories! If you want, you could try this from the Home > Buy > Sports Mem, Cards & Fan Shop > Cards > category:

    (189*, 190*, 191*, 192*) -189 -190 -191 -192 -topp*

This gives you, more or less, cards from 1890 through 1929, assuming the year is in the title. It returned about 1700 matches currently, most of them look like they are what you're looking for.

Hope this helps, I agree in your situation, the category makes it a lot easier.

These might help with the pre-30's baseball searches. You can fiddle with the options to get just graded cards.

    -Tom >>

Thanks, Tom! I was looking at some of my saved searches within the defunct pre-1930 category (e.g. E9*, T21*) that I used to pinpoint certain issues that I wouldn't want to overlook when browsing, and figured there had to be some combination of commands that would work. I appreciate your saving me some time tonight. It now seems so simple looking at your search but I know I would not have arrived at that search as quickly as you probably did.

<< <i>I've been buying on Ebay for 3 1/2 years, and the next time I search for an item by category (or sub-category) will be the first time. >>

    /////////////////////////////////

EBAY - and I - quite agree with your search methods.

I kinda feel like I am in the Twilight Zone reading the
N54-tales and this thread. I "promise" that relatively
FEW folks search the way that many of the respondents
    here/there do.

Folks who want to make "favorite searches" can still do
so. MOST folks just want to type in the name of the thing
they want and then buy it.

Further, with the number of shoppers coming from the
search-engines, it boggles me that folks are worried the
new scheme will hurt sales. (EBAY's new scheme is built
on the way search-engine traffic shops and buys stuff!)

    .................

Folks are free to hate/love the new scheme. And, in
figuring out which camp to be in it might be important
to note that EBAY cannot model its search-scheme on
the "habits" of a few thousand collectible buyers.

EBAY is NOW an "Outlet Mall." Collectible buyers/sellers
can benefit from the traffic, but they cannot dictate - or
even influence - what kind of searches EBAY says are
    the most profitable.

I regularly browse certain categories and bid on tons of stuff I normally would not. ebay just ost the sellers a lot of bids because I am not going to browse 244,000 items to make random bids

I too doubt anybody is going to browse 244,000 items.

As they do now, they will simply type in the name of
the stuff/thing they want to see, and a list of those
    items will be returned.

    .................

    At "All Categories"

    When I type in

    "baseball card"

    I get 16,000 items returned.

    THEN I GET

    Refine search

    Categories

Sports Mem, Cards & Fan Shop (15,037)

    Cards (13,148)

    Wholesale Lots (223)
    Autographs-Original (1,290)
    Fan Apparel & Souvenirs (219)
    Vintage Sports Memorabilia (229)
    Game Used Memorabilia (18)Manufacturer Authenticated (5)Autographs-Reprints (2)
    Collectibles (454)
    Trading Cards (261)
    Wholesale Lots (41)
    Tobacciana (5)
    Photographic Images (46)
    Advertising (30)
    Postcards (8)
    Autographs (12)
    Paper (14)
    Historical Memorabilia (6)
    Casino (3)
    Pez, Keychains, Promo Glasses (3)
    Comics (3)
    Animation Art & Characters (3)
    Banks, Registers & Vending (3)
    Breweriana, Beer (2)
    Disneyana (2)
    Holiday & Seasonal (2)
    Transportation (2)
    Animals (1)
    Pinbacks, Bobbles, Lunchboxes (1)
    Pens & Writing Instruments (1)
    Arcade, Jukeboxes & Pinball (1)
    Decorative Collectibles (1)

    IF I THEN SELECT

    "Cards"

    I GET

    Cards
    Baseball (12,279)
    Storage & Display Supplies (478)
    Other (190)
    Basketball (105)
    Football (99)
    Hockey (14)
    College Trading Cards (2)
    Golf (1)
    Racing (1)

    //////////////////////////////////////////////////////

EBAY claims to KNOW that almost NOBODY searches for
    stuff that way.

Those who do can simply build their fave-searches and
browse the way they always have.

    ................................

In Sports, Mem and Fan Shop

    the word

    "card"

returns about 113,000 listings in CORE.

The word "card" returns 10X more than "baseball card"

BUT neither word is a good/common search term.

    "Rose PSA 1970"

is a typical search example that folks use.

The new scheme does not change or impede that
    practice even a little bit.

That search returns the same number of listings in both

"All Cats" and "Sports, Mem & Fan."

Exactly my thoughts too, searching by category picks up things that are misspelled etc, like a listing where the seller typed "71" instead of "1971". John

One big lol @ people who can't find what they are looking for on ebay, regardless of how they list the categories.

As previously mentioned a few times, searching categories nets some sweet deals when looking for bad titles/mispelling, i picked up a 1979 Gretsky (not Gretzky which is the correct spelling) rookie by going through PSA Vintage Hockey listings...
