This was sent to me recently. I suggested burying in the back yard.

Someone tried to scratch off a spot....

    That's sad to see.

    It reminds me of a slabbed coin (seated dollar IIRC) I considered that had the same problem.

    The coin is still a cool coin, and I think that "burying it in the yard" is a bit harsh, but certainly its value has gone down as a result of the alteration.

    A Heritage description would call it a "unique die polish mark". Probably bring $2500.

    If that's the only problem, I think PCGS should/would silently net grade it down a point or two and slab it AU50.

    A good coin doctor could smooth out that small area and the grading services would never notice that there was tooling there.

    Yeah, in hand it's very obvious that someone tried to scratch off what looks like some pvc.

    I've seen this many times. There's a small carbon spot and some idiot takes a needle and tries to scratch the spot away. The TPG's consider this to be tooling and will genuine holder a coin for this reason.
