<< <i>Your G-4 Buffalo looks a bit better than the VG, just saying (only one I've looked at so far) >>
I think the date wear is the reason for the G4 grade, but the pictures are just to give an idea grade.
Edit: Need more coffee.
Ain't that the truth! They should have added that if you take a third party graded coin and compare it to the pictures and they do not grade the same, don't be surprised.

Are all of the coins graded by the same TPG, and from the same generation holder?

.....yes, ricko, unless it goes 'poof'
.......very good Daniel! thanks for the info! must be quite an undertaking of which i certainly appreciate!
<< <i>Interesting, and nicely presented.

Most of these coins where graded by PCGS, a few are NGC and a small amount by ICG and the old, white ANACS holder. The PCGS holders are mostly modern, but some are old green holders. These are just grade comparison pictures, and not the gospel for grading every coin by.

It does take a lot of time, but what I'm learning is beneficial to me, and I always share this with other collectors. I have to search and research to find the coin that fits the grade, because I go by ANA standards then PCGS. I see ANACS has trouble grading the 1794-1800 coins, but NGC and PCGS seem to do a good job. Otherwise, it seems these three companies are consistent, but I can't say much for the higher grades of MS65 and higher, it seems pictures just can't translate the details very well.
It's to easy to make an MS65 look MS66, or and MS66 look MS67, when it comes to pictures, I hope uninformed ebay buyers read this. I know many attempt to get good deals, on high grade coins, but 9 out of 10 coins on ebay don't make the grade stated by the seller.

I just checked this site out, very nice. Thanks you for so much information. I wish I had seen this sight earlier. Are you going to put more of the in between grades up, like you did on the mercs?

I like the feedback here, because it's the best method to make it collector friendly. I just added Indian Cent grade comparison and Large Cent pages

<< <i>Check out the Indian Head Cent comparison photos. I feel the VF35 1873 is far better than the EF40 1888 and maybe equal to or better than the EF45 1877. Then that is only my opinion.

Look closely at the wear, and you will see the reason for the grades. The VF35 just has better eye appeal, and the pic is a little better.
thanks,

Very interesting resource.

<< <i>Thanks. I hope to add some more inbetween grades, but it get tricky in MS64 and higher grades. Most high MS grades don't show their grade well in pictures, and often an MS65 can look better than an MS66 on the screen. First, I will have each coin type respesented then I will begin adding details.

I hate to be critical of such nice work, but that is what I noticed about the Walking Halves, the difference beteween the 65 and the 68 seemed to be all in the strike.

<< <i>While I like the idea, i don't agree with the Lincolns and Indians. They are not graded correctly IMHO. >>
I didn't look at the Indians, but I disagreed with the grades on most of the Lincolns.
Also, I think you need to compare the coins apples-to-apples. Your Braided Hair Large Cent guide has no less than 3 different types in it.

It's the reason I offer a disclaimer. I'm creating this, and will improve it when I can, so people can get an idea of a coins grade. I have received many emails of visitors who use the guides to compare to ebay pics, and they claim it has saved them money. If that's all it ever does, then I'm happy.
Thanks for all the comments, and if anyone has pictures they would like for me to use, I will.

I used several different varieties because I'm limited. I just don't have access to all the grades for the Silly Head and the other varieties, for example. However, one can gain a rudimentary idea of how these coins are graded, and hopefully I will be able to compare "apples to apples".
<< <i>And you don't have to agree with all the grades to still use it as a good resource! >>
Yes, my point exactly. I fully realize how difficult and complicate this task would be if I tried to amass every grade for all varieties for every series. I can already see how I need to have one page for the 1921 High Relief Peace Dollars, because it's obvious the standard is different than for the other dates.
I might just get it all finished in a couple years. I don't know.lol
