The Hockey rip has been revised so please read carefully. This is a BBCE group hockey Topps run from 1976-1991 (minus 1982, 1983 because of availability) 1979 Topps isnot included in the rip but is listed seperate. << <i>For those of us that don't know a lot about hockey cards, what are the key cards in each year/

Some Key rookies....
Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman, Roy, Brett Hull, Sakic, LaFontaine, Dennis Savard, Jari Kurri...and lots more
mathew
drugs of choice
NHL hall of fame rookies
Would be great to see someone pull a Brodeur 10 from score though.
<< <i>I'm messing with you John. Regardless, I'm broke ass. Couldn't afford to jump in anyway.

No I agree. For $5 a box it is a no brainer.
8 hours later and only 4 people have signed up. A similar baseball or football rip would have sold out already. With hockey everyone talks about getting in but no one signs up after a thread is posted.
BTW, got the Sakic from you Bill.
Not really interested in Topps.

Should have been a 10 and worth quite a few dollars more.
<< <i>For those that always argued with me about not having hockey in group rips, this thread is showing you why.

I've always asked that if someone is going to put together a group rip to please throw a box or two of hockey on there. '79 Topps is very popular and if this were a group rip for just that then I am sure this would be sold out by now. '85, '85, '86 OPC very strong.
Same goes for the other OPC '80s hockey - sells very well. As far as '80s Topps however, not really worth the money - OPC is the way to go with hockey.
I am thankful that jswieton put together this rip - I am still thinking about it but am only really interested in '79 Topps and 80's OPC

Has there been other group rip's (base/foot/basket) where the minimum opening price was 160.00?

Yes, the '79 Topps baseball vending we just did was close at $143 shipped. The '78 Topps football vending last year was in the ballpark as well.
...were the baseball/football vendings for approximately 120 cards, minus 10-20 wax stained, minus 10ish stained from bubble gum, leaving you with just under 100 clean cards?
Hockey is different than baseball because there is such a huge market for baseball cards UNLESS you go for OPC...hockey collectors want OPC unless there is a major key card in a Topps issue (ie: Gretzky and Lemieux)
.......I'm going to give myself the weekend to think about it
<< <i>...obviously '86 Fleer will be almost double

I am going to disagree with this. If you are looking for just volume then this rip is not for you. You are not really comparing the same thing here. With the 79 vending rip most people were searching for 1 key card, Ozzie Smith. The hockey rip contains rookie cards for a least a dozen superstars that changed the game of hockey. The resale value is also much higher than that vending box. Vending is more than likely not going to produce any PSA 10 cards do to the damage a vending box creates.

I don't think you realize how many cards you lose in vending to corner dings. Most of the cards are garbage. Very few gradeable cards - definitely much less than 100. And as John stated, you are usually just chasing a couple of cards in a vending box. You have more opportunities for hits from a wax run. If this were baseball or football, which I collect, I would be all over this.

I have bought vending in the past, and completely overlooked that problem (corner dings)
separate the 79 pack into its own...
and do the pack run on its own...
will lower the price considerably on both ends
if someone in the pack run wants a 79..then they can just get in both
just kidding

Don't forget the second coming of the Great One- Eric Lindros. Anyone want a ton of Lindros RCs??
Alright, so for some odd reason I am compelled to ask some questions about hockey cards.
First off, I collect non sports cards. I used to collect baseball cards until I realized I haven't watched a baseball game, live or on TV, for 15 years or so. So I sold all my cards and focused on cards that interested me. I saw this thread about hockey and for some reason I keep being drawn to the Gretzky card. Let me preface all of this by saying I have never watched a hockey game in my life, aside from one I did attended about 15 years ago with some friends and was freezing cold the entire time (and was hit in the head by an aluminum can). I guess the experience there turned me off. To tell you the truth, I know very little about hockey. I know there are 3 periods, I know there is a blue line and I know there are shift changes (XBox 360 hockey taught me a little) What captivates me though is the fact my office window look directly at the big TV screen outside the new Prudential Center in Newark, NJ where the NJ Devils play. Everyday I sit and look at it and I guess after staring at it for the past year, the word "hockey" got imbedded into my head. I have never gone to a game there, only walked around the entrance and gift store.
I wonder if something inside me is a closet hockey fan. I wonder if by being so close to something it is giving me a little motivation to start a new collecting focus.
So after much rambling here, by buying into the 1979 Topps packs, what am I really getting into here? I would probably buy several, open a few and get a few graded to store in my collection? Are these packs really anything special in the hockey sportscard world?
Anyone want to try to upsell me on this fanatic idea of starting a new collecting focus.
I see that in the PSA set registry that hockey is going to be surpassed by non-sports in the next few months for total sets. I know from reading this board there are lots of hockey card collectors in Canada. I guess I am just thinking out loud with this post.
Anyways, I'm going to sleep on it tonight. I'll post again in the morning and give me you "in or out" response.
Collecting:
- Post War baseball HOF RC's
- 1980's unopened baseball
- All Mutoscope and American Beauties
<< <i>In my humble opinion the 1979 Gretsky card is the centerpiece of modern day hockey >>
Well then at least spell his name right.
