<< <i>Alright, so for some odd reason I am compelled to ask some questions about hockey cards.
First off, I collect non sports cards. I used to collect baseball cards until I realized I haven't watched a baseball game, live or on TV, for 15 years or so. So I sold all my cards and focused on cards that interested me. I saw this thread about hockey and for some reason I keep being drawn to the Gretzky card. Let me preface all of this by saying I have never watched a hockey game in my life, aside from one I did attended about 15 years ago with some friends and was freezing cold the entire time (and was hit in the head by an aluminum can). I guess the experience there turned me off. To tell you the truth, I know very little about hockey. I know there are 3 periods, I know there is a blue line and I know there are shift changes (XBox 360 hockey taught me a little) What captivates me though is the fact my office window look directly at the big TV screen outside the new Prudential Center in Newark, NJ where the NJ Devils play. Everyday I sit and look at it and I guess after staring at it for the past year, the word "hockey" got imbedded into my head. I have never gone to a game there, only walked around the entrance and gift store.
I wonder if something inside me is a closet hockey fan. I wonder if by being so close to something it is giving me a little motivation to start a new collecting focus.
So after much rambling here, by buying into the 1979 Topps packs, what am I really getting into here? I would probably buy several, open a few and get a few graded to store in my collection? Are these packs really anything special in the hockey sportscard world?
Anyone want to try to upsell me on this fanatic idea of starting a new collecting focus.
I see that in the PSA set registry that hockey is going to be surpassed by non-sports in the next few months for total sets. I know from reading this board there are lots of hockey card collectors in Canada. I guess I am just thinking out loud with this post.
Anyways, I'm going to sleep on it tonight. I'll post again in the morning and give me you "in or out" response. >>
Of you are talking about starting a serious hockey card collection...then I would skip the Topps Gretzky RC and go for the O-pee-chee Gretzky Rookie. It is considered to be the true top rookie.
If you do the 79 seperate I will take 4 of the 79's, if not 2 each. I usually don't do a ton of hockey collecting but what the hell, time to pick the sales up.
Collecting 1993 Finest Refractors & All Refractors 1993 - 2001, 1964 Topps Psa 8.5 or Better Soon to be Collecting 1966 Batman Color and all Hall of Famers in all Sports in as High a Grade as I can Afford.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
Today is the last day I am going to keep this rip alive. I am going to tell Steve on Monday that we are no longer interested in the rip unless we get a surplus of people interested today.

Remember how quick the 79-80 and 85-86 OPC group rips went?
I'm in for a pack of 1979 Topps, but I don't think this will make a difference.
