Can Someone tell me what causes this to a Silver Eagle?

Hello,
I was going through some Silver Eagles and came across this 2001 Silver Eagle with a metal end thingy sticking out the edge of the coin. It is round (like the end of a piece of wire) it will not come off. What do you think? Thanks,

This is the result of a cracked collar. The collar is the "third die" in the coin production process and is subject to cracking.

When it does, this is what happens.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

There is plenty of slop in US Mint SAE Tubes to accomodate this.
