Jeter sets all-time shortstop hits mark

SEATTLE -- With a third-inning double on Sunday, the Yankees' Derek Jeter logged his 2,674th career hit as a shortstop, surpassing Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio for the most in Major League history.

Jeter entered the afternoon against the Mariners at Safeco Field trailing the record by one hit, but he tied Aparicio with a first-inning single to right field off Seattle right-hander Doug Fister.

The career Yankee stood alone after his next at-bat, a run-scoring two-base hit to right field off Fister that drove home Ramiro Pena with the first run of the game. Jeter, who made his Major League debut in 1995 and is in his 15th season in New York, also has 13 hits in his career as a designated hitter.

A 1984 inductee to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Aparicio was a career .262 hitter in 2,601 games over 18 seasons with the White Sox, Orioles and Red Sox.

    Jeter will likely finish the season around the 2750 hit mark.
