Scam on Craigslist

Just received a call from a dealer who showed that someone is listing a coin from our website on craigslist.

What the heck can we do about this scumbag

If he is hosting the picture directly off of your server...you are in some control here:

Go find some awful offensive picture and swap the coin pic out for that one.

If he has copied that photo and is hosting it himself, there is little you can do.
Find the listing on Craigslist and flag it.

    Needs to be flagged.

Before it disappears, I cut-and-pasted the text of this awful ad:

"UP FOUR SELL IS A 1839 C 2.50 CLASSIC HEAD GOLD COIN THAT IS GRADE BUY ONE OF THE TOP GRADEING OUTFIT. OUT THERE WHICH IS NGC THIS COIN IS A MS61 WHICH HAS A PCGS PRICE AROUND 27000 BUCKS OR BETTER. THIS COIN WOULD MAKE A GOOD COIN FOUR SOMEONE THAT LOVE RARE GOLD COINS.YOU CAN EMAIL ME AT FANOFLITE@AOL.COM . I DO OFFER A 7 DAY MONEY BACK MINUS SHIPPING. AND THE FORMS OF PAYMENT WELL BE A CASHIER CHECK .THE WELL HAVE TO PUT A HOLD ON SHIPPING TELL THE CHECK CLEARS .AND I WELL TAKE A BANK WIRE. AND ONCE THAT IS DONE THE COIN WELL BE SHIPPED SAME DAY. AND MY NAME IS OSCAR LONG. AND THANKS VERY MUCH FOUR LOOKING. "

Cashiers' check with a "hold" or a wire transfer only.

    Four shame.

I called Craigs List. I got a snippy female on the line who told me I was not following procedure. Not following procedure?

Whoever gets ripped off from this lowlife should go after craigslist.

This is where this dirtbag stole it from:

    39-C

    Grrrr

The dealer told me that this lowlife has been advertising other coins on various craigslists around the country . I called the police dept there and got an answering machine. Seems like they are away from their offices.

I saw a news report a few days ago about a real estate agent that was posting houses for sale/rent on CL. Well, Someone else was also posting them, Meeting the people & Taking deposits and disappearing. I don't remember the outcome but don't believe they were able to do anything. Its a shame but I for one would Never purchase an item such as that from someone who used that grammer, Says "bucks" instead of dollars or that wants a check/wire transfer. CL is great for Cash in person deals only!
    Its all relative

Craigslist takes no responsibility for what's on their site. I had a problem with a purchase on there and was told to call my local police department. I did so and was able to rectify the situation. That's my advice to you: keep calling the police until someone picks up.

They have been notified now in writing and on the phone. This is where some fine lawyer somewhere might want to cut his teeth and gnaw on craigslist a bit and see what happens.

Far as continuing to call the police. I'm done. I've notified the police in 2 places and craigslist. Beyond that there's nothing else I can do.

Maybe if I called to tell them that 2 kids were smoking pot in the parkiing lot they'd mobilize the national guard. But for what could be grand theft, I guess they don't care.

Most law enforcement is done reactively. They don't have the time or resources to be proactive. Once the guy does rip someone off, they'll be happy to investigate.

I believe that there is more you can proactively do. Since you have the AOL email address for the fraudulent lister, you could try notifying AOL that one of their users is perpetrating fraudulent activity using their AOL email address. The usual response from AOL is that they can only control activity on the AOL website, but that is pure BS. You can be certain that if AOL was notified that one of their subscribers was promoting child porn on the ethernet that they would be instantly shut off.

I think that it is extraordinarily unlikely that someone would attempt to purchase this coin from the Craigslist ad. Those of us who buy such coins are, contrary to public opinion, not as dumb as we look.

He's in Olive Hill, KY. Someone nearby, like Rose Hill, should ask to come over to
look at it in person and see what he says. Any takers??

Be interesting to see what he says.

Although I don't think this illiterate is going to get any takers, you could create your own post on Craigslist stating that you own the coin.

Graigslist allows all users to flag posts for removal. Do that several times and they are good about removing it. Trying to go any further i.e. find out who did it and doning anything legal will probably prove to be a waste of time.

Post your own notice on CL stating that the subject post is a scam and fraud.

Unfortunatly, offensive pictures are very common on CL. So, it would probably just look like a typical CL poster.
