Just a quick greeting

Hello Forum Members-

Just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself, you will know me here as Miltonj. I enjoyed coin collecting some years ago and am just getting my feet wet with it again. Wow the internet has made a huge difference in this hobby!

I have been reading (lurking) around this forum for about a week and am very impressed with the knowledge of the members here. That said, I decided I needed to join this great resource. I also became member of PCGS so that I may begin to get some of my own coins graded as well.

Hope you are all having a great summer and I'm looking forward to learning what I can here as I go.

Happy hunting everybody!

How in the hell are u.. Welcome..Just watch out for the trolling Halibut that lurks on the forum.. He's nasty.. There are much nice people here to learn from. If you have anything to offer, please do.. Many of the pros can still learn also. But again that halibut will sneak up on you and play you for days, months and even a year until you dip him and put his little spewing chops in the cooler..

So, tell us what type of coins you like.. Where are you from? Age and stuff like that.. I'm Yaha, real name George Graham From Maryland.. Most bad Halibuts hide behind alt names and hell one day they are Tim and the next Brandy.

Thanks all. Not sure I understand what the trolling halibut means, but I like my Halibut broiled and topped with a light, lemony hollandaise. image

My coin interests are in American coins almost exclusivley, however I do have a couple of foreign gold coins I have hung on to just for giggles. Liberty half dollars are a favorite, also another favorite would be draped or bust coins. Though I will admit the majority of my coin collecting past had a it's largest focus on Morgan and Peace dollars.

    I am from Maine.

Ok - first question, do you all think your first impression about the grade of a coin is the most accurate?

Welcome Milton, that was my Dad’s name, but everyone just called him Milt. He was also a coin collector and enjoyed the hobby. I got enthused when I was very young when I found an 1812 Bust half dollar in an old shot glass.

Listen to the sages here, there are many, many undetected land mines out there right now for coin collectors.

    Have fun and enjoy!

    Hi Milton...and welcome!

My answer to your question is: Maybe...maybe not. I like to think I'm close most of the time, especially for coins in my area of interest. But I do think that my first impression of the grade of a coin is the most important opinion I form about that coin.

While it is true that you can grow to love (or hate) a coin, my experience has shown me that it's in my best interest to trust my instincts. If my initial impression about a coin is "Wow!", then I go after it. If I don't, I'll regret it later. If my initial impression about a coin is "That's nice, but...", I have learned to move on to the next coin and don't look back.

Hope that all makes sense. image

    No, not for me.

There can be a lot of subtleties that I miss the first time. I don't usually
change my opinion but it can change dramatically.
