Anger and Shock: "Man Dies After Rare Coin Crime"

I reported this crime about a month ago.....here's the latest!!!!!!
ROOTSTOWN TWP., Ohio -- When burglars entered 68-year-old Richard Lowther's home on July 2nd, police say they beat the man so severely he was left paralyzed.
Thursday, after nearly a month in the hospital, Lowther died after life support was removed.
Portage County deputies say 27-year-old Jodi Fetty knocked on Lowther's door claiming she had car trouble and needed to use the phone. They say while Fetty pretended to use the phone, Cortez Oliver, Darrell Dukes and Jonathan Dukes entered Lowther's home, started stealing rare coins and beat Richard.
Portage County Prosecutor Vic Vigluicci says the four were indicted for felonious assault and aggravated burglary, but since Richard's death the case will go back to the grand jury where the charges could change.
"That man had a very very active life, he was going all the time. It's still setting in on me, I'm gonna miss the old guy," neighbor James Oaks said.
Oaks was home the night of the attack and ran to help.
"The dogs woke me up in the middle of the night. I looked out the window and saw two people running out of the house, and I went to the back door and I heard Dick saying 'what are you doing to me'." Oaks said.
Lowther's family could not be reached for comment. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Donations can be made to the Richard Lowther Medical Fund, P.O. Box 150, Rootstown, OH 44272.

Very very sad. This is also why many of us need to be discrete about who knows that we collect coins and the extent of our collections.

I think what would be better is to cut his nuts off and put them in his mouth, sew it shut, and put him on life support. Problem is the "anti-waterboarders" would cry foul and the perp would be cleared Scot-free and live a long and criminalous-life....

<< <i>Crimes like this are tragic and disturbing, but they do happen. After the fact arguments can be made about how the victim could have defended himself or deterred being a potential target, but those arguments are subject to wide interpretation. I do not believe the victim was treated any more or less harshly because he had rare coins. >>
i agree ...thugs rob and burglarize people "they think" have money.
older people have been around longer...therefore possibly have over a lifetime have acquired more stuff...(possibly expensive stuff)
"old" usually (not always) makes a target that easily subdued.
i doubt that they knew he had coins until after they entered the house.
how many of us have coins on display in our own homes? whether on a shelf or on a desk.... under a microscope being researched ? along with five coin books layed open to specific pages...and our favorite coin pictured either on the wall or as a monitor desk top wall paper?.......i know i do

If it was your Father that was killed would you think differently? They should all be hung in public with other convicts watching!

Too bad there's little hope for the type of ignorance that you display.
I've had cars pull all the way down my driveway to scope out my house a few times in the past 8 years. It's not a warm, fuzzy feeling and I keep wondering when I'll meet their criteria for a robbery.
I knew it would happen.

<< <i>This type of heinous crime (not at all because it was a coin collector) is why people arm themselves. Police CANNOT and will not protect you from these atrocities. It is up to individuals to prepare for and carry out their own defense. Certainly these miscreants should receive death sentences.... they will not. However, if the homeowner had been prepared, several of them would likely already be dead, and he may be alive enjoying his hobby. Preparation is the answer - training, equipment, mindset and follow-through. Cheers, RickO >>

I'm with you, it sounds harsh, but done enough, and people might start thinking twice.
Because if we do, we might benefit from LOVE being the law and society being at peace.
Okay, back to reality. What kind of coins did these people kill for ?

in the house. The only thing to keep in the house would be a
loaded gun close at hand. If a stranger asks to use the phone,
do not open the door, instead offer to call the number for them.
After sundown, I just do not respond to anyone at the door, unless
they are a neighbor well known to me or a relative that I like. I might
be a grumpy, crusty old curmudgeon, but I am alive and still able to
put up one hell of a fight before I go down.

<< <i>This is one reason why I don't openly discuss coins in public. This is a tragedy that a good man that probably lived a good life was murdered by scumbags that will have no real use in life besides absorbing tax dollars whether out in the world or in prison. >>
If it is entirely predictable, what's the point? I don't know if they are hung, but they could be hanged.
It was totally unnecessary to beat the man, I mean if anything two could have held him down and the other taken the coins...and for that, they deserve what is surely coming.
