Anger and Shock: "Man Dies After Rare Coin Crime"

GoldbullyGoldbully Posts: 18,006 ✭✭✭✭✭
I reported this crime about a month ago.....here's the latest!!!!!! image

ROOTSTOWN TWP., Ohio -- When burglars entered 68-year-old Richard Lowther's home on July 2nd, police say they beat the man so severely he was left paralyzed.

Thursday, after nearly a month in the hospital, Lowther died after life support was removed.

Portage County deputies say 27-year-old Jodi Fetty knocked on Lowther's door claiming she had car trouble and needed to use the phone. They say while Fetty pretended to use the phone, Cortez Oliver, Darrell Dukes and Jonathan Dukes entered Lowther's home, started stealing rare coins and beat Richard.

Portage County Prosecutor Vic Vigluicci says the four were indicted for felonious assault and aggravated burglary, but since Richard's death the case will go back to the grand jury where the charges could change.

"That man had a very very active life, he was going all the time. It's still setting in on me, I'm gonna miss the old guy," neighbor James Oaks said.

Oaks was home the night of the attack and ran to help.

"The dogs woke me up in the middle of the night. I looked out the window and saw two people running out of the house, and I went to the back door and I heard Dick saying 'what are you doing to me'." Oaks said.

Lowther's family could not be reached for comment. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Donations can be made to the Richard Lowther Medical Fund, P.O. Box 150, Rootstown, OH 44272.

This is why we need a death penalty. No excuse for this. Remove them from society.

Very very sad. This is also why many of us need to be discrete about who knows that we collect coins and the extent of our collections.image

Agree with the death penalty, but justice needs to be swift if it is to have any effect on wannabee criminals. Now, it takes 20-30 years on death row to get the perps to their reward. Not much justice there. Didn't Judge Roy Bean say to the criminals in his court that "I'll give you a fair trial, a good meal, and hang you in the morning"? We need some of that justice back in this country. Way too much handslapping going on.

I think what would be better is to cut his nuts off and put them in his mouth, sew it shut, and put him on life support. Problem is the "anti-waterboarders" would cry foul and the perp would be cleared Scot-free and live a long and criminalous-life....

Crimes like this are tragic and disturbing, but they do happen. After the fact arguments can be made about how the victim could have defended himself or deterred being a potential target, but those arguments are subject to wide interpretation. I do not believe the victim was treated any more or less harshly because he had rare coins.

i agree ...thugs rob and burglarize people "they think" have money.
older people have been around longer...therefore possibly have over a lifetime have acquired more stuff...(possibly expensive stuff)

"old" usually (not always) makes a target that easily subdued.

i doubt that they knew he had coins until after they entered the house.

how many of us have coins on display in our own homes? whether on a shelf or on a desk.... under a microscope being researched ? along with five coin books layed open to specific pages...and our favorite coin pictured either on the wall or as a monitor desk top wall paper?.......i know i do image.....(refer to the "not always" in the 4th line above.)image

Just glad the outcome was not the same here! I am guessing this crime was done for drug money the same as I am thinking what happened to me. The other day a few blocks from my house a guy was robbed at gun point 5:30 AM in his driveway. And this is a "good" area. Us working people are starting to be out numbered by the crack/heroin addicts. The penalties shound include death for violent drug crimes of any kind. The liberal do gooders pamper these criminals- we need public floggings, and hands cut off for stealing. What a drain these useless people are on the rest of us. Imagine how much they cost us in health care alone. image

Every time something like this happens, it reminds me that we really do not have any protection, other than what we provide for ourselves. It's guys like Steve who like to blame the victim.

I've had cars pull all the way down my driveway to scope out my house a few times in the past 8 years. It's not a warm, fuzzy feeling and I keep wondering when I'll meet their criteria for a robbery.

This is a horrible story. I cannot image if this was one of my grandparents. I can only hope that justice is served and those responsible are held fully accountable for their actions.

This type of heinous crime (not at all because it was a coin collector) is why people arm themselves. Police CANNOT and will not protect you from these atrocities. It is up to individuals to prepare for and carry out their own defense. Certainly these miscreants should receive death sentences.... they will not. However, if the homeowner had been prepared, several of them would likely already be dead, and he may be alive enjoying his hobby. Preparation is the answer - training, equipment, mindset and follow-through. Cheers, RickO

    Terrorism comes in many forms.

The liberal do gooder people think they are saving lives by fighting against the death penalty and chain gangs and other forms of strict punishment. In reality they are costing many more lives of the innocent public by treating these scums kindly than giving them real penalties. I talked with an old aquaintence the other day that was sentenced to ten years in jail for violent crimes about three years ago. He is out now?? and living in an apartment complex in a nice neighborhood. His expenses are funded by the state until he gets a job. For sure this guy will hurt or rob someone in this otherwise nice area- just makes me sick to see this guy unleashed on the innocent people. Oh yeah he said the prison was great- like being on a vacation. Good food and a nice scenic place in Wisconsin. Also he said he enjoyed lifting weights three times a day.image

There's a reason God said : Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not covet they neighbor's goods...but we can't allow God a say in this, can we ?

Because if we do, we might benefit from LOVE being the law and society being at peace. image

This is a tragic reminder , that one should not keep valuables

in the house. The only thing to keep in the house would be a

loaded gun close at hand. If a stranger asks to use the phone,

do not open the door, instead offer to call the number for them.

After sundown, I just do not respond to anyone at the door, unless

they are a neighbor well known to me or a relative that I like. I might

be a grumpy, crusty old curmudgeon, but I am alive and still able to

put up one hell of a fight before I go down.

This is one reason why I don't openly discuss coins in public. This is a tragedy that a good man that lived a good life was murdered by scumbags that will have no real use in life besides absorbing tax dollars whether out in the world or in prison. Frankly, a bullet is much cheaper than an 18 month trial followed by dozens of appeals.

This made me think of something(duh). In the late 60's and early 70's there were a number of times when my collections( not coins in those days) landed me a spot in the newspaper, you know, human interest type stuff. In those days you could read the paper, get a phone book, and be at my house in ten minutes, never once did that bother me. Now I make a point of not mentioning my collection to anyone in town, times sure have changed.
  • This is something I tell my grandparents not to do ALL the time... You keep your alarm set, you deadbolt the doors... but when someone rings the bell you simply open the door unquestioned.
It was totally unnecessary to beat the man, I mean if anything two could have held him down and the other taken the coins...and for that, they deserve what is surely coming.
