Here's the lastest with some GOOD News and some Bad News!
I'll give the bad niews first.
Some wires got crossed at ANACS and my coin was not brought in the shipment for the ANA Show whic means I could not see it or show it at the New Ikes Workshop!
Now here's the good news! ANACS is Fed Exing it out to the ANA Show and will have it on display at the ANACS Booth for all to look at and loupe if you wish.
Now for the Bad News, I'm flying out at 7:00am tomorrow morning which means I won;t get to see myt IKE in its holder before the rest of the folks at ANA Tomorrow!
But, I should have it in my hot little hands before the end of next week!
Herb, I was very impressed with the new information that had been presented, some of which I am not at liberty to discuss.
There were quite a few attendee's which perhaps Rob can give you specifics on. I thought that one fellow was from the CPG and another fellow was from ANACS. JP Martin did come by and share the two 1971-S Type 1 Reverse Proof coins and they were simply sweet.
Ehab was kind enough to entrust Rob with his 1971-S BS S/S coin which I greatly appreciated! Thta little bit of RPM sticking out of the miontmark was really difficult to see and it is an absolute guarantee that it went bye bye with the very first die retreatment! Still, really impressive. Gandyjai received a call from Grandam in the middle of the workshop to report that more S/S coins had been graded by PCGS but none were at the MS66 mark so Ehab's coin is still a top pop!
Roger Burdette was in attendance and presented Rob with some documentation from the National Archives regarding dollars from the early to mid 70's. This will be a tremendous store og information to keep Rob busy for at least the next week!
In my opinion, Rob, Brian and Andrew did a very good job at presenting. I'm really impressed with the knowledge that the IKE Group has accumulated over the past three or four years and could only dream about knowing as much.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
I was looking forward to seeing your new coin in hand as well, as it would have easily trumped those marvelous 71-S Proofs with the Type 1 reverse! I was soooo happy to finally see that those actually DO exist! BIG THANKS to JP for dropping by and sharing them!
Even though your prototype was not in attendance, we could still drool on the extra-large beautiful pics of it that Rob brought.
We did "unveil" a few newer things like the REV (Re-entry vehicle) that is only found on the earlier strikes of the FEV. We'll post a few threads on those things to catch all the other Ike nuts "up to speed" if they weren't able to attend.
Yes, it was a pleasure to have Ehab's S/S and I must say.....I remember Home Run Hall talking about PCGS adding some Varieties at a FUN PCGS lunch a couple of years ago and one of MAIN CRITERIA was: That any new designated variety would almost have to be naked eye or at most, EASILY visible with a 5X-10X loop. PCGS DID NOT WANT to start designating varieties that had to be put under a microscope to be seen! I looked at this S/S Ike VERY long and hard with under 10X and a good lamp, and I must say....I don't think I could pick one of these out WITHOUT putting it under a 'scope! How this coin got to be a PCGS designated Ike Variety and FEV that has no less than (5) "naked-eye" features found on NO OTHER Ike Dollar did not, is baffling!
However,....I must say that I am VERY happy that PCGS finally DID add some new Ike Varieties, there is still room for a few more very deserving ones.
Here's a photo of Aaron looking at some IKEs and in the lower left is one of the large photo's Rob Supplied and danged if I didn;t forget to slip one of those into my goody bag!
As for the S/S, if I didn't know what to look for and where to look for it, it could easily have been passed up. But now that I know how small it is, I'll definitely be spending more time on those 71-S's. For future reference, this is what it looks like. Literally:
I went by Wayne Herndon's table and picked up several DDO-004/DDR-021 1971-S BS's along with a straight DDO-004 (I'm reasonably sure its a DDO-004 that is!) in a LDS with kind of an interesting mintmark.
This obviously is not an S/S but I couldn't wait to get it under my scope to see what was really going on!
The DDO-004's had an interesting mm in that there was a small piece of metal to the north of the S. Almost like the tip of the S/S but I'm thinking probably not. When I get my camera back from the Missus, I'll see if I can capture it in a photo.
I also accumulated a nice 71-S BS TH.

Sure is a shame your coin wasn't there.
