requested no qualifiers and got a few...handcut card came back "authentic" without grade..

Does PSA automatically assign a qualifier for being off centered even when you request no qualifiers? Also, I had a handcut card come back as "authentic" and without a grade...I have seen the handcut cards with grades and mine were in great shape...

Thanks,

Patrick

I submitted two Ty Cobbs hand cut...both came back AUTHENTIC. It is my belief, they don't assign grades to hand cuts?

Hand cuts WILL be assigned a grade IF they meet the standards for the issue. When they do not, they are noted as Hand Cut and graded AUTHENTIC.

They do assign grades to handcuts.

My guess? If not cut properly to their criteria - then they get the authentic grade.

    From the PSA grading standards:

*In order for PSA to actually assign a grade to any of the cards that possess visible/defined borders on all four sides, evidence of that border must be present. If the cut exceeds the visible border for the card in question, PSA will encapsulate the card as "Authentic" only. If the card is severely undersized and suffers in overall eye-appeal, the graders may deem the card not suitable for authentication or reject the card as minimum sized altogether

This is what I was talking about - if ya don't have any of the border - no grade from what I can see.

I personally like the qualifiers. It's a way of describing the cards defect while showing an honest grade otherwise. I'd also pay more for a 9(oc) than a 7... JMO

    Eye appeal really counts though.

As for the qualifiers you can ask but that does not mean you will not get them all the time.

It is up to the grader.

Plus -- there are some qualifiers that do not go away...things like MK and MC. However, OC qualifier usually should theoretically go away to a lower straight grade-

    Steve--

Does PSA assign ever assign any qualifiers to hand-cut? Besides (ST)? All I've ever received was a grade with no qualifiers or "Authentic".

  • Doesn't it seem weird that if you take a box panel and cut out one of the cards with all four borders (as per the grading standards of PSA) then none of the other three cards will have all their borders left intact?

    Hand-cuts receive O/C qualifiers...

If you pay and request no qualifiers it should be granted regardless of the grader...jmo

I've seen O/C qualifiers on some hand-cut cards. Some, like Red Foley, are very small with exceptionally narrow borders, for instance.

I have yet to see cut 1952 Wheaties cards contain boarders. Does this mean the blue boarder must be intact to receive grades? If so there goes 4 wasted submissions for me.
  • found the answer to my own question '52 wheaties don't include the boarder to be a 10. Mile High's catalog has two of them as psa 10 no borders showing. /whew

There are quite a few handcut cards that do not have borders. In this case, implied borders are considered as well as the specific measurements of the cards. A simple modern example would be Topps/OPC/Fleer box bottoms that do not have borders but should meet the standard 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 measurement.

Isnt grading a hand cut card akin to grading a trimmed card?

No, because some issues like Hostess, Bazooka, etc were ONLY distributed on boxes and were intended to be hand cut. Very different story with pack-released cards that were trimmed or sheet-cut cards that were intended to be distributed in packs.
