1830 Capped Bust half dime. Your thoughts?

This arrived today - destined for the 7070. Interesting die crack, doubled 5, and a clash. I think this is a keeper. Would you give her an acetone soak?

I give all of my new coins an acetone bath just to remove any nasties that may not be visible to the naked eye, such as oil from fingers, PVC, saliva etc. As for your coin......Overall, not bad.

I soak nearly all of my raw half dimes in acetone before putting them away in an album, 2X2, or submitting them to a TPG. Yours is an 1830 LM-4.1 or LM-4.2. Both remarriages are R-2. I consider the 1830 LM-4 die marriage the single most difficult die marriage to properly attribute when trying to determine which is the 4.1 remarriage and which is the 4.2 remarriage. The lack of clarity on the differentiation between these two remarriages stems from the half dime book ("Federal Half Dimes 1792-1837") being a bit vague, IMO.

To be entirely frank, I don't like the looks of this coin. It appears to be mildly porous which could be the result of bit too much time in a solution of coin dip or even some time in the ground.

Bill, I appreciate your comment on the porosity - I agree that it would better if it were less porous.

I tend to agree with BD and RnC about the acetone bath treatment of raw coins going into a 7070.

No comments on the clash and doubled 5? The clash is pretty unusual I think, and makes (for a 7070) a really unique example of this issue. The 5? Likely to simply be MD?

that die marriage pretty much always has the clash and the doubling on the 5
