Commems still being hammered in the Price Guide

I thought that they would have bottomed out about this time.

It could be just the fact that the guide is catching up with reality.

Commems have been in the price guide gutters for over a decade. But you don't build a nice commem collection buying at price sheet levels.

Right, there are sure a lot of red listings for Classic Commemoratives. Most of the price drops are in the most common issues, so I am not too concerned.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

Well...if you think about it a minute or two...you can't expect the "movers and shakersimage" to stock up for a bull run UNLESS the prices are brought down a bit...then
they can stock up and THEN go for the bull...run that is...bullrun...ya know? image

  • If the retail investor is getting hammered in net worth, there is zero incentive/opportunity to buy commemoratives - or any collectible. Taxation will be substantially higher for the wealthy in the next few years....many reasons to not see an upside or even a catalyst for an upside.

So you as a wealthy person will pay a higher tax on a coin purchase than I will as a not so wealthy person? image

A nice toner just sold for 50% off previous prices!

Wealth destruction on a nationwide scale results in many assets classes declining in value, eg home prices, stock prices. Discretionary spending decreases with real or perceived wealth destruction. Increased state & Federal taxes will create even less discretionary spending. I'm not referring to the taxes you pay on coins - which is an issue on its own!. image

Bear, is it fair to say that the guide is catching up to a) prices realized at the auctions -- and -- b) not the prices dealers are still demanding on commems for sale?

Keeping price guides elevated is favorable to everyone on the dealer side (auctions, wholesalers, retailers, price guide publisher, show dealers with a case full of commems, etc) and only hurts the retailer buyer since they may not be keeping up with auction pricing. Showing lowering prices to collectors doesn't induce confidence in them continuing to buy never mind possibly selling out or reducing their holdings. Even better date commems and toners won't be exempt from an overall lowering of the commem market.

Besides collectors being short of cash, how about the dealers that keep a large inventory of white commems? Even if dealers keep their show prices high, but no one is buying, what's the end result? Cash flow drives the market. If a product is not selling well, those are slowly weened from inventories for products that do sell.

Commems will bottom after this recession bottoms or until monetary inflation takes hold.....whichever comes first.
