<< <i>By making it into a crusade is what is scary to me. There are people on the bay who get mad at you than contact your potential customers or buy stuff just to leave negs or even try and call and harass you at home or work. >>

Rob's role is more defender than crusader, IMO. I don't feel Russ was wrong, but I wouldn't have blocked the guy. I admit the offer was a low baller for sure.

The guy Russ blocked probably never considered his"over the top" reply would get him and his ebay ID pasted as a new hot topic on a message board. He lashed out a little when his low ball offer met with a brick wall. But sellers with the BEST OFFER option have such a wide variety of practices, buyers sometimes don't know where to start. This guy starts low.

I don't like his feedback either, but with 9 NARUed, who knows.

Why do people write "100" "200" etc.??

    << <i>Why do people write "100" "200" etc.?? >>

When someone does that it's because they are the 100th person (or 200th, 300th etc) to reply to the thread.

It's like a contest to see who can get it before someone else. image

Sometimes they do it well before the 100th post and it is done in that case
because they feel the thread will get that far. Usually if that is the case it is a
    thread with potential.

    Good for you.

OK, I understood when it was "99" people would write "100" for the 100th thread. But when they are not on that number they are predicting to the nearest 100 how far they think the thread will go? (Now this is a "WORTHLESS" question but what the hell...)

Many times the post count is the most sensible post in the thread. It's something most people can agree on.
  • MintacularMintacular Posts: 1,138 ✭✭✭
Fair enough. Does anyone know what that Mantle thread ended at and was that a record? This one will never make it to that level.

    ..................................

Actually, it's the "reply count," and not the "post count."

Often, someone will be bored/disgusted with a thread
and post "100" or some other high number in an early
    post.

Such numbers are also posted, sometimes, as a form of
    "post padding."

Got most of what you said in the first part, Storm. One little thing not clear:

<< <i>Often, someone will be bored/disgusted with a thread and post "100" or some other high number in an early post. >>

--Wouldn't that suggest the poster thinks the thread is interesting enough to hit a high number or are they being sarcastic and thinking "like this would ever hit 100"... oops

    Mint

I think this question could have had it's own thread.

I already used up my one OT today on a "worthless" Griffey one so I thought I would double-dip over here.

Funny how this type of question is worthy of a thread (to me it's not) to some but one about Griffey Jr and 'roids is not,

To each his own I guess.

Mint no thread is worthless. Even one some have seen 99 times b4.

So that proves Russ's point even more. The guy wanted to negotiate so I guess he would
    have countered with:

    Best offer 1...........8.00

    Counter 1 34.00

    Best offer 2 ....9.99

    counter 2 29.00

Best and final offer 3 11.55

Looks like Russ had this guy pegged from the start IMHO.

Ok Robert I'll help you along, psychic connection was not needed.

All anyone had to do was use the info YOU provided.

Hence in my post in which seemed to go over your head I used words like

'guess' and 'would' Just because someone WAS proved right does not mean

    they use a crystal ball.

    Understand it now?

The guy in his email to Russ claimed he wanted to negotiate.

What was he going to do negotiate from 8.00 to 11.55?

I think Rob is calling Russ an overpriced douchebag seller that wants too much for his cards, at least thats what my crystal ball says.

I think you need to re read the thread, it wasn't my auto dealer scenario it was someone else.

    Hint for Robert

    Page 2 post number 13.

I wouldn't have blocked the guy. I am one of those people that makes the ridiculous bid. If you put "or Best Offer" out there and it is something I want I will offer something very low to start. I work part-time at a car dealership and we get offers of $15000 for new Camry's all the time. Well, if we told people to get out of the dealership and never to come back every time we got a stupid offer we would lose a lot of sales. Just like Perkdog described, I recently bought a vintage football card in which I offered about 40% of the SMR to start. We counteroffered each other for a day or so and when all was said and done he accepted $140 for a card that he asked $175. I was happy to save $35 and he was happy to make a sale. But, had he blocked me for making a silly offer, then that card would likely still be sitting in his inventory. So why bother making the stupid offer in the first place? Partly to see how far down the seller might be willing to come on a first try, and partly because there is that rare shot that the seller needs the money or wants to move the item so badly that he takes the stupid offer. Yes, it has happened. Good luck with the Cutler card. I think you may have let a good buyer walk.

    ================================================================================================================================================

To that Post the OP countered with his reply and THEN and only THEN did I make any comment about a car dealer.

    Get your facts straight Robert.

    Good for you.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Actually the 'original analogy' was spot on.

One other point just because the card sold for 14.55 does not mean that the 'winner' bid
14.55 for all we know he could have bid a sum higher. My crystal ball tells me that he sniped at 40.00
    and got lucky.

The only thing we know for certain is that his winning bid was one increment above.

Don't worry Robert he tried his hand at being a spelling cop and then failed to spell
words himself. In the very same post no less.

He has resorted to being the 'edit cop'..................
