Dipping?

I'd like to learn a little more about what dipping is, I've seen coins, and people telling me they are dipped, but have wondered what that means exactly, some people consider dipping is not a method of cleaning a coin, but IMO you are still altering that coin by changing the look.
I can see what dipping does to a coin, and the end result sometimes, makes the coin look better, and many coins that are slabbed are also dipped, so is this considered a method of cleaning or do TPG just ignore dipping, when it has been done to a coin with MS or AU details?
Any help?

you will see a lot already discussed
Since you live in the DFW area you might want to hit a local library and see what they have in books with regards to coins, numismatics, etc. and start your learning process there, and I would bet by the time summer is over and you have to go back to school you will have learned a great deal about coins, collecting, preservation and the such, and your post count on this board or any other may dwindle to what a typical YN would be doing.
Or, ask your dad to buy you some books off of Ebay that tell you all about collecting munisma and the such. and if you are as smart as some folks seem to be with you- do a search in regards to dipping- you would be surprised what you can find out here on this board alone!
I truly do not care how many chat rooms you attend, so far a few have seen what your level of knowledge is relation to coins is, and even though you have some nice pieces in your collection, they are mediocre at best.
read and keep reading, then go to as many shows as possible- in fact there is a show in Grapevine, Texas this weekend- have your dad take you and go to each table and look at the coins you want to collect- ie Indians, Morgans, Buffaloes- and study them- not just the slabbed stuff but the raw as well. And then come back here with a report on what you saw.
if you are not an ALT, you will accept this as wise information on how to collect fine specimens in the category of your endeavors- as TDN was trying to tell you- sit back, look, listen, and watch.
no need to thank me or anyone else that has/is trying to help you.
I am not going to Grapevine Texas, where ever that may be, because my dad won't waste his time on that, or gas money.
This weekend we are going to Trade days in fredericksburg texas though, and there are coin vendors there, and I'd be glad to give you a report on what I saw
I did type in "dipping" in the search box, and read a few threads, and have a better understanding of it, but still have no clue how one is to go about doing it? I would never dip my coins, as I wouldn't know what I was doing, but I've always been curious to see how it is done, and also some before and after pictures.

Did you not say you were from the DFW area? If I'm wrong I apologize, but hitting a 'TradeDays' flea market won't show you what to look for in quality let alone in quantity.
You are an alt, you bleed it very nicely now...
dip and coin
there are 2 pages to go thru

Give the kid a chance. People know him from other boards and have posted that already. I spoke with him briefly and believe he is who he says he is.
I dont get why some questions are not ok to ask or bring up if youre a new member... We were all new here once, and to just out right call this young man a liar with out ANY evidence is just not right IMHO.

If I recall correctly, this young fellow lives in the San Antonio Area so Grapevine would be quite a drive.
However, there are plenty of B&M Shops in the San Antonio area.
No, I do not think this is an ALT.
The name is LEE!

I'll second that. Strongly.
Thanks

<< <i>what would you be looking for on the after pic to know it had been dipped? >>
Without the before, it's pretty much impossible to tell.

I did not call him a liar, and I did openly apologize to him if he was not from the DFW area, and as one person put it - there are several coin dealers in the San Antonio- Austin area for him to browse, as for the trip to Grapevine- its a couple of hours from San Antonio, I've done it and I live in Houston.
Because he posts on other coin chat boards makes him knowledgeable in the looks of a coin from photos on the internet? You are kidding right? I know the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words, but in today's world- photoshop can make a plug nickle look mint state and can do wonders for ugly ol men as well.
As for questions being brought up, T$ gives the appearance of being a very intelligent young man- how hard is it to do a search on the computer these days for a specific subject like dipping coins? Google has 1,460,000 results! and if he has been chatting on other boards- has this not been mentioned there?
Give me a break, give TDN a break, give those that read what some of you post a break. I've been on this board for what 5 yrs now, but I have been collecting, or should say- collections were done prior to my birth and handed down to me and my brother as we were able to understand what we were holding in our hands, and at 14 I was chasing tail and collecting the old fashioned way- go to a local dealer or several dealers in and around Chicago- and add to that collection (Ebay was not invented yet).
I hope T$ proves to eventually be a learned young man, only time will tell, and so far his tude on how to find 'gems' is not what I would be shouting from the roof tops over. I'm still waiting for a response on getting the books that can help him - but nobody saw that post now did we...
get your flame throwers primed boys- I'm wearing a suit today!!!

He said several times who he was. You said, like it was fact, he is an alt. Thats calling him a liar.

He also said in another thread he is 14, probably doesnt drive yet, and that he has an illness that keeps him from even going to school at times. It might be hard for him to get out of the house more so than others.

Youre right. He should be doing alot more searching, but then again, maybe he just has some different questions on a subject and cant seem to find what he is seeking. No harm really right?

Ok, but like I said, he may have trouble leaving the house. And Ill continue to post what I think I should, like you and everyone else. If you dont like what I personally post, no problem. Just dont read it then.

I agree here also, we didnt say buy the books like normal. But, that could be due to the way the threads turned out. No need for a suit of flame resistant material.

Grapevine texas in is near DALLAS!
San Antonio is some 3 hours away! That is too long of a drive, and too much gas money, just to see some coin show, is what my dad would say
I don't have access to a whole bunch of coin shows, but I know there is one coming in San Antonio, this july I believe, I'll have to look into it

I've done a google search for dipping coins, but I thought I'd get info from collectors on this board, just because it is in the internet doesn't mean it is true, and I didn't want to get the wrong info, I thought I did something smart, I asked a question I had about something I really knew nothing about.

Travis- do a search here on PCGS and in the dealers portion of that search type in San Antonio- you would be AMAZED at all the dealers within the area that I know for a fact many welcome youngsters to look at their inventory, they may even let your dad look as well- and buy if need be, and yes there is a show coming up in July. Save some of your money and ask your dad to take you on a road trip- it could be a fun time. Does your father collect coins? Make it a dad's day gift- pop for half the gas to go!
You might even ask if there is a local coin club that you could join.
My father could care less about coins, same with mother, only person who ever collected was grandpa, and he died, and had $300,000 worth of coins. (All of which were sold by my step grandma, or his manipulative second wife)
Hey Travis, keep posting, asking questions, stirring the pot,
and generally torquing off all these old geezers. (Myself included
in the geezer comment.)
There are many days when I come here looking for something
interesting to read, and perhaps comment on, and find nada.
Your prolific posting has livened this place up. It's not just your
posts, but the replies, both the positive and the ugly, that have
made the last couple of days interesting again.
Please don't let the nay-sayers run you off. It's been a blast!!

Hoard the keys.
a subject to this thread that I wanted to comment on.
Travis, there are some products, such as "E*Z*est",
sometimes refered to as "E-Zest", and "MS 70" that
people use to dip coins.
There are some instances, such as the Kennedy that
Russ posted, where dipping is a positive thing, and
there are instances where the result is not so good.
Then there are the ones where the result is good
for a while, but due to poor rinsing, the coin turns
ugly over time. Unfortunatly, it doesn't take any
training to dip a coin, anyone can do it, but not
everyone can do it correctly.
Then there is acetone. It is used to remove gunk
off of a coin. Not really classified as a "dip", but
still needs to be mentioned.
Edited to add this warning!!
Acetone should never be used except in a well
ventilated area, i.e., outdoors!! It is very dangerous
stuff!! All warnings on the can should be heeded!!

that helps
I've heard in instances, when MS70 is used, that it is a bad thing.... So are the instances when it is a good thing?
I've seen before and after photos with acetone, and it looks to work pretty well

Oh no, I just drank some... Then swallowed some baking soda... WHAT DO I DO???
LOL!
I'll be careful... If I ever use it
Pardon my ignorance, but what the heck is an "alt?"
An alternate identity.

Ooooh- dipping experiment 101
and then sell em on the flea, under his daddy's ebay handle...
interesting method..

Well the point is- IF he is 14 and selling/buying on Ebay- he is gonna get in trouble, secondly he comes here and trashes a respected member of the boards with his alleged enthusiasm on coin collecting and when given advice- he shunned it. Now a few are going to flame me and I may be bammed for life- but if you are 14- and playing games- it comes back to haunt you and ghosts are all over the place.
I think I called him an alt- I was wrong- he is a troll and a bad one at that..

Believe me, I wasn't questioning you. I was saying I think the way he has conducted himself is sad.
To anyone else who wants to say anything to me, please, do it via PM. I've made up for my actions, and will have to live with it as long as I live, and to be honest, I feel like a total ass.
About the ebay comments..
OH PLEASE! 10 year olds buy and sell on ebay, in fact, I know one of them, and many other YN's buy and sell on ebay, under their parents name. Nobody has ever had a problem with this before, and I don't see it as that big of a deal
