And for the record, I absolutely hate negotiating in general. While I realize that it's necessary in certain situations (large purchases, buying a house, etc...), the last thing I need is to waste my time trying to squeeze an extra $2.50 out of someone for an Ozzie Smith insert. When I price stuff out, time and research goes into my final decision. If someone makes and offer that I find reasonable, it's theirs. If not then I may or may not send an offer back, but I'm certainly not obligated to do so. Usually if the item is under $200 I'll let the "negotiation" end with their initial offer and it won't go any further. I'd much rather spend my time doing just about anything other than negotiating with people who may or may not be wasting my time. I'm sure I've left a ton of money on the table by avoiding negotiation, but why do something you hate doing to make a few bucks, especially when you've already put the time in to figure out what you wanted for the card in the first place?
Poppa - if they think the seller's BIN price isn't bad, they may be worried that someone else will buy the item before the seller has considered their offer.
This guy is looking for a sucker to offer "half" or even "one quarter" initial offer and sell the $100 Mantle for $200-$400.
As for the guy who called me a "liar"--you are allowed 3 "Best Offers" in a week so my first one is my best offer at that time. If rejected, maybe I will consider an even better offer if so inclined, as was the case in the Ted Williams scenario...

Hi Nick,
That never crossed my mind, but it certainly makes a lot of sense!
Hmmmm... maybe Poppa oughta start raising his BINs a little higher!!
Anyone can offer a card at any price they want. Anyone can offer anything they want if best offers are accepted. As for me those who ask outlandish prices looking for a moron to buy it irritate me more than the idiot low ballers. After reading this thread it seems that those who sell cards think those who purchase cards are idiots. In other posts I learned those who buy cards think those who sell cards are sleeze bags.
Maybe they both have a point. I think I will offer $8 for that 61 Mantle. Hopefully I can make his BBL
<< <i>I have most of my BIN auctions setup to automatically reject bids that are too low... just forgot to check that box when I set this one up. That's my-bad... but still, how much success can you have offering up 20% of asking?... surely not much. >>
Its kind of like the guy who has a terrible pick up line for the ladies. He gets rejected 99 times, but on the 100th time he gets the girl and takes her home. It only has to work once for it to be successful.
I used to have a lot of BIN or BO when I had my ebay store and yes, I got a lot of stupid offers and I just declined them. I didnt counteroffer a stupid offer, nor did I add him to a BB list (Which is an overreaction IMO).
Techinically "Best Offer" is just that. If $8 was this dudes best offer, then that was it. I disagree with his premise that you should counteroffer and he would have reoffered something higher, that is stupid on his part.
Edited to add: I have bought roughly 40 Bowman Chrome Cutler's raw over the past year or so and have never paid more than $3, so the demand is quite low on that item right now. >>
"You don't sweat much for a fat girl" has never worked for me the 200 or so times I've tried it. I'll keep working on it though. Thanks for the encouragement.
Some BINs are totally out of whack with market value, such that a 20% offer is reasonable. The seller may know this, and hope for someone to come along dumb enough to offer half of the BIN as best offer.
I'm thinking that some people should not use the best offer feature. I know I don't. Steve
Agreed, me either except on high dollar stuff with a specific strategy in mind. I generally don't submit offers all that much either since the only really good buys on ebay are auction style. If I wanted to haggle I'd set up at a flea market.
I like to use the buy it now or best offer option because it is as close to the card show environment as you can get (as far as negotiating is concerned) and I am willing to work with anybody on the price of *most cards.
For instance, just today I sold a couple Ray Bourque stickers. Normally I would have countered their offer, but when I recognized it was somebody that helped me with my Mike Bossy master set a few months ago, I let him have the cards for his original offer.

Reminds me of a game my three roomates and I used to play in College. We would go out to a Bar and each throw in $25.00 in the pot which was big money back in the 70's. Each guy in turn had to walk up to a Chick in the bar and say, "Let's go home and F$%K!", Exactly like that! First one to walk out the door with one, Won. Of course the avreages were something like, 1 in 10 drink thrown on you, 3 in 10 Slap you, one in 10 Punch you, ect. Never did not one of us win for the night!!! Never!
And that doen't even begin to tell the story of the Fat Chick contest we had.....But that's a story for a different day!!!
Neil
Actually Collect Non Sport, but am just so full of myself I post all over the place !!!!!!!
If you don't want to spend yime fielding low ball offers use the auto decline, but if you forget, just counter with what you want. That's what I do. If you're looking for $30, I would have countered his $8 with a $30 and if he came back with $10, I would have said, "No Thanks"
Edited to add: I don't think you can blame someone for trying to see what they can get away with. Most people do it everyday, at work, at play and even on eBay.
In a time of a recession, I believe ANY offer made is a good offer. This seller was unappreciative and if I recall correctly wasted both of our times not just his. Thanks for the heads up on PSA 10 by psa-set-guy. Thanks for the e-mail - it just confirms that this person was and is immature.
Since honest sellers can no longer leave NEGs for the dregs that EBAY has allowed to take over the site, I always look at the FB buyers have left for others.
That helps me decide if I want to do biznez with the buyers.
<< <i>Why are you defending the OP who admitted he messed-up and forgot to add the "decline option"?

I absolutely disagree. With the way ebay has handcuffed sellers, sometimes taking preemptive action against problem buyers is the ONLY option. When I buy/sell stuff on ebay, I enjoy quick, drama free transactions. When I use the Best Offer option, I almost always set the defaults to decline the lowballers. If I happen to see an offer sheet where a buyer has put through 3 offers that were all below my decline number, I'll look at the buyer's feedback and if the offers are very low and the buyer has a questionable history, he's added to my BBL. I've found that the buyers who want something for nothing are also the ones who expect unreasonable service.
Simply said, if I think a buyer may end up being a PITA, I'll gladly block him and not think twice about it.
Rob I hope you have a nice view on your cross may all your commandments be followed.
The potential buyer made it personal with his response to being blocked. It's just ebay it's not like Russ fired him from his job and look he can find other Cutler cards elsewhere on ebay so why get upset?
It looks like you guys are chums now maybe he can hire you to find all his cards cheaper on the bay since it seems hard for him to do.
I think I have bought from you in the past, too bad

You have every right to an opinion but you chose to take it to another level by interjecting yourself into this by contacting the potential buyer and then acting as his proxy. I think that was way above just offering an opinion.

There's no right or wrong here... just opinions.
I'm always puzzled, though content, when I have buyers that DON'T use the Best Offer option and just pay the Buy-It-Now price?
I have had more of them lately, 3 this month already, and can't figure out why someone wouldn't at least try to save a few bucks?
The price ranges were anywhere from $50 to $500.
Regardless of their financial status, I find it strange that people avoid negotiation when offered.
