Famous in the coin world at least. I had two instances over the past two weeks, bought a coin from Ron Guth, and sold a coin to Jay Parrino.

I typically leave fame out of it, but if you said Longacre or RYK bought from you, that'd be somethin' big.

Sold a coin to a Frank Viola about a year or so ago. Don't know if it was the same as the former Minnesota Twins pitcher.

I sold a very scarce Canadian Half to Dr. Fey last year on ebay. He is the co-author of the pocket VAM guide. I also sold a bunch of Lincoln rolls to Charles Daughtrey of Coppercoins. He is a brilliant individual who knows a great deal about cent varieties.

I too sold a coin to Jay Parrino. It was a generic gold coin, PCGS certified, way back when gold was very cheap. He suggested I be a buyer rather than a seller of gold and he also gave me one of my very favorite catalogs: "The Knoxville Collection." All in all I think I came out on top of that transaction. image

Last week my PCGS renewal package came in a priority mail envelope.

The same day, a professional looking box with the name Ron Guth on the return address, also arrived.

My first thought was PCGS must be giving out some type of renewal bonus.

It turned out I had bought a Toned German Coin from Ron Guth off ebay, without realizing it until it arrived.

Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

I have sold a few coins to Mr. Mallis (the M of VAM) and Ken Bressette.

    edited to add:

Oops, I have forgotten the original question. I did know who the above two gentleman were at the time of the transactions.
    Mr. Hoffecker still qualifies though.

On two occasions I bought a slabbed gold coin and when it arrived it had the Bass pedigree on the label. Both were nice coins and the dealer never mentioned the pedigree and didn't didn't appear to charge any premium for it.

I asked a gentleman at the Baltimore Show his opinion about a possible Morgan die variety. After thirty seconds of review he announced definitively, "It's post-mint damage." I asked him how he could so quickly figure this out. And he educated me with his polite answer.

"By the way," I asked, "what is your name?"

    "John Wexler." he responded. image
