Everyone focuses on the tail feathers, but I never noticed how much more detail there is on the the wing. Pretty wild!

never noticed that. man, every feather has lines in it. Even the Neck feathers are textured.

I think the neck feathers stand out more becasue the neck on the regular issue is completely smooth.

I agree, all of the examples I have had showed much greater detail overall than regular ones.

I did mention the extra detailing in the wings in one of my COINage articles on these. Don't think I ever noticed the neck, though.

It would make sense if, as Rogers was trying to make the tail feathers appear more white by removing detail, he would do the same to the neck, which is white on the actual bird.

I always emphasized the lack of detailing in the tail feathers over the reduced detailing in the wings because it is very difficult to say "Reduced detailing in the wings" without running pictures of both to show the difference between the two. People who have only one variety often cannot visualize the other. Think of the various years of Seated Liberty halves where the "Small mintmark" in one year is the "Large mintmark" in a different year.

Saying "No detailing in the tail" vs. "Strong angled detailing in the tail" is different. It's an either/or situation.
