Cancelled Morgan dollar die copies

I got these off the bay. Can anyone tell me about the history of these? They are unique, at least I have never seen them before.

The Obverse die is an 1884, not sure if it is a CC or not, I have not tried to VAM it - but I think so.

The Reverse die is an 1878 CC

    So, these are actually made from real canceled Morgan Dollar dies? If so, very cool! How much were these?

    edit: a trusted source told me that the Washington quarter "die" image I first posted (quoted by someone else) was a fake...in other words the image was not that of a true die for a Washington quarter.
    So I removed the image. To make the point I originally intended to make, which was showing a "mirror image" appearance of a die face, I went to Fred Weinberg's site and found a useful image of an item he has for sale:

    I think those are legit - they have recovered hundreds of CC dies from the old mint site and a number of trial strikes exist. I think they are issuing them pretty judiciously tho.

    It's from an original pair of CC dies---I had the chance to handle the original dies this past summer.

    However, this pair is not from any of the dies recovered from the old CC Mint yard.

    Oh, I know they are not unique from a "They are the only ones in existance" but they are unique in that you dont see them everyday.


    I would LOVE to get one in silver - if anyone finds one let me know, I might like to pick it up!
