Did anyone see it coming?

I'm sure we have all dreamed of turning back the clock and buying up minty vintage cards at a fraction of their cost today. But did anyone "see into the future" and do just that when prices were still reasonably low?

I did hear from a dealer that Red Zone Sportscards (aka Shaqfu) during the 80s took all of his $ and piled it into vintage only and now has a full warehouse of these cards.

I'd be interested in hearing any of those stories.

i was a dealer in 1985-1992, and the best sellers were by far the latest releases--when i went out and bought a huge collection, i would usually sell off the older cards first image to pay for the whole deal and make the money on the newer stuff image. wow--huge mistake--there were usually very few interested in the older cards vs the newer cards--i remember a show in Gardendale Al where some guy came thru pedaling 86-87 basketball sets for $10 per set--i bought none---1 year later a guy from NC was spreading word that he would pay $100.00 per set--i went out and promply rounded up 5 or 10----wow--mistake after mistake after mistake--i certainly did'nt see it coming--1 more story though i have hundreds-a guy from work comes up to me(1987?) and says a lady at his church has a bunch of old cards her husband had collected-- i go over and its an album full of 1930's play ball--i look thru it not very excited since the big money was coming from newer stuff--i pulled a Dimaggio and a couple of other players i recognized and offered hera sum i thought was fair and she thought was very fair--i go to a mall show in Chatanooga Tn the next weekend(they were dynomite) and put the 3 cards out--immediately someone comes by, stops and says, would you take $100 for the Dimaggio?--without thinking i said, sure--as he walks away, i'm thinking, wow, what a dummy---lol--turns out, i was the dummy-

By "vintage" I mean=60's and older. I know everybody and there grandmother thought it would be smart to buy 80's unopened stuff and hold onto it for years...

  • I tried (and failed) to buy 52 Topps Mantles back in '01 & '02 on eBay (I kept coming in second). PSA 1's went from under 1k to 5's which were commonly 5k.

The 2 I remember most were a 7OC going for $2,900 (with the centering easily within a straight 6). I tried to "manually snipe" and my POS dial-up modem crapped out image A few months later I saw a PSA 8 for under 20k! I frantically tried to gather money to buy an 8 from a local seller for 18k, I fell a few k short trying to get enough money, which was a lot for an 18 year old kid.

When I saw this title, I thought the thread was going to be about the Red Wings being up 2-0 on their way to their second straight thrashing of the Penguins for the Stanley Cup. My bad, carry on.

Back in the 80's they were low only relative to today's prices.

back in 1980's dollars they were not cheap.

Of course if you bought then and sold now you made money.

    How much? I dunno.

Everything is relative. Sure, I had the chance to buy in 1985 a 1952 Topps Mantle that would grade out to be a 4 for $500. I bought lots of vintage cards cheap. I traded a dealer three 1983 Fleer Wade Boggs for a complete 1973-74 Topps Basketball set since he couldn't give them away at $25. The same dealer sold me a 1981 Topps Football set for $4. I bought a stack of 31 1952 Topps High numbers from a coin dealer for $310. But honestly, it didn't seem like that big of a deal. My house cost me $59,000. That same house today sells for nearly $250,000 (and I don't own it sadly - just like I don't have the high numbers anymore). Cars were a third or half of what they are today. A pack of cards was 35 cents. I remember in the late 80's seeing a 52 Mantle go for $3000 and thinking just how ridiculous the card prices had gotten. But obviously, they have gotten far greater. Where will they be in 20 years? How do we know that RIGHT NOW isn't the best time ever to buy vintage cards? Who knows?

What I saw then, and wish to hell I had stuck with my convictions on, was that there was no real premium being paid for truly "Mint" cards. The era of all dealer cards being called mint and all customer cards being called hurt or near mint.

I loved to collect the best possible examples, including centering (which just didn't matter then like it does now), of 60s and 70s hall of famers. I had a Ryan rookie that I guarantee is in a 9 holder somewhere now, that booked for I want to say 800 at the time. I put a 1,500 price on it and left it dead center in my showcase and took endless heat from other dealers, while drawing endless gawkers from show goers. It was a great draw and I sold a ton of other ryans as a result. One day, pre show, a fellow dealer walked up and started counting out hundreds on my showcase... very bittersweet day.

Anyway, I got tired of not seeing any premium and nice cards became harder to come across, and I lost interest in general, so I sold a whole bunch of what I am sure later graded well at book... Oh well.

I think its even worse there .

May I suggest first changing your icon to a Yoda , then declaring your interest and absolute loyalty to either Mark McGwire or Albert Pujols.

Another possibility is to start a thread about the conspiricey (sp?) of HGH and how Bonds , Clemons , Raffy , Sosa , and all the others , were slandered and cheated out of their glory .

I noticed that you seem to make a LOT of , Wow how did that ever happen threads . If sports are getting a little tough to thread about I might suggest If anyone has ever noticed that an apple falls to the ground---- Lets discuss.
