i see my 1964 sms ms67 dime as a trophy coin

since joining these forums some 3+ years ago i've learned so much through a progressive fashion

many desire changes have taken place as threads popped on this forum

well the 1964 sms coinage had set a place in me to oneday own at least one of the 5 denominations

last year an opportunity arose and i surrendered 2 matte proofs to acquire my example

in hand it was a bargain price nightmare because honestly...it was a dawg...covered in splotchy milk spot looking surfaces

becoka imaged and nudged me towards a spot review plea which when back in hand i honestly must say...it shines in beauty

so it's my best shot at truly being a trophy beyond my best belief with a scant estimated 40 for mintage

I'll define "trophy coin" as being one that you obtain simply for the purpose of owning, as holding a special significance, or because it is just so nice that you simply "have to" own it. Cost isn't really an issue for this type of coin, and you probably paid dearly for it, or got lucky. I think it should not be a coin that you bought simply for the purpose of completing a set.

As I define it, I have at least two trophy coins.

One is a wonderful proof Indian Cent in an NGC holder, labeled PF65BN CAMEO. It really doesn't matter to me what the label says. This coin belongs in a museum. It has the deepest mirrors I've seen on a PR IHC, and presents like two coins in one. At the ultimate refractory angle, to quote my seven year old, "it's like the front of the coin is exploding with color, and the back is solid gold." Other viewing angles present dark brown mirrors and light brown frosty devices. As Bruce Braga said when I showed it to him, "This coin has everything a cent collector could want in a coin." Strong words!

The other is a pop 6/0 1909 VDB MS66BN in PCGS plastic. I may not have as many nice things to say about the coin as with my IHC, but if ever there were a coin that you could easily confuse with a Matte Proof, this could be it. The surfaces are definitely Matte-Like, and the color is very strongly reminiscent of the coloration commonly seen on the coins in that series. Hmmm. I only had to pay 11X price guide for this baby. I figure... what a bargain! I just can't imagine ever selling it.

I will also concede that I may have what amounts to a trophy registry set. As my first set of Matte Proof Lincolns is complete, there's no real reason that I should need a second, but there it is. Or I should say, here it is. Really, I just like to collect these coins for their stunning appearance and beautiful color. As they don't really have any place in my top ranked set, they live way down the list. Don't be fooled! Each and every coin in that set is a stunner!

My trophy, the 1901 PCGS DMPL Morgan, I no longer own. I still have a number of coins I consider trophies. One of them is the same date, a 1901 VAM-7 in PCGS 63/CAC.

there's the coin and here's the story..........................
the coin was listed on the auction sheet from a local coin club i belonged to and i made note of it because i had to work nights when the Club Meeting was held. i intended to ask a friend to bid on it for me but decided not to. a few days later i was talking to the local dealer making arrangements to go to another club meeting and when i mentioned the coin to him he told me he had bought it and he'd have it with him. when we got to the meeting i looked at the coin, thought it was rather nice, then turned it over to see the Reverse of 1938 and my jaw almost dropped!!! we agreed on a price of $50 and PCGS decided to grade it PR67.

If you consider it your trophy coin, then so do I. Price and rarity do not matter to me concerning trophy coins. Its just a coin that is your fav and something youre very proud to have in your collection.

I personally don't have one. But I'm wondering as the OP of this thread, do you yourself have such a trophy coin?

Currently I do. Its a heavily worn and beatup 1879 Morgan. Its a pocket piece, but its the coin that started this passion in numismatics for me years ago, so yes, Its my trophy coin and something I will NEVER part with.

YEP...a few in fact. But the most obvious is my 1927-S MS66, POP 2/1. Impossible in MS64/65...MS66 fuggedaboudit! 100% original surfaces, not a mark on it, just a die ejector curve on the reverse at 9:00, as made.

Here's my centerpiece coin. An 1802 $1. I've owned it for ~20 years, and it's still in it's old rattler holder. It was graded MS61 back then, and most people that I've shown it to believe that it should MS63 with todays standards...

A more common coin, but with a lot more historical baggage, is this 1902 $2.50 Liberty. To the best of my knowledge it is the only gold coin that flew on any of the early US space flights, e.g. Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. To make it even better it flew on Gemini 4, which was the flight where Ed White had the FIRST American spacewalk.

we've traded almost everything else, but these 2 were NEVER put on the table. Well,
situations change, and his daughter is collage bound.... There are 6-10 known of the
72D and 10-20 known of the 74D. Note the lamination defect on the 72D, that makes this one unique.

Mine came from Boiler78.

It was an 1805 Irish penny, gilt copper proof, NGC PR64 UCAM.

This one had it all- age, history, a cool design, a harp to appeal to my Irish bloodline, and not only was it a 200-year-old Ultra Cameo proof coin, it was BIG (dollar-sized) and it looked like a big fat proof GOLD coin (which of course it was, partially, being gilt copper). I don't know the history of the Soho mint with regards to these coins, but I suspect they were presentation pieces of some kind. I have seen some in the original metal shell they were issued in, which is cool. There can't be that many of them around. I also owned an 1805 gilt proof halfpenny that was raw and a bit lower grade (PR61-ish). That was awesome enough, but the slabbed UCAM penny was mindblowing.

What was even cooler about this trophy coin is that I got it for a three-figure pricetag (just barely). It had all the look of a five-figure pricetag coin.

I do miss it, and wish I'd made and kept better pictures of it (or kept the coin itself).

Everyone here has probably heard the story of the trophy I unwittingly swapped away by now.

Yes, I do own one trophy coin. I will always own this piece and if I had to sell my collecvtion to keep it, I probably would.

Its the first piece of Exonumia from Moms town and in its own right, rare and historical

Small Eagle's coin blows my trophy out the water, but here it is, an AU-50 1808 quarter eagle. Although I paid more for it than any other coin in my collection, I will freely admite that it is not my favorite coin.

These two rank ahead of it.

1795 half eagle, AU-55

1792 half disme, VF-30, my #1.

I would consider my PO01 Lafayette and FR02 Hawaiian to be my trophy coins. The Hawaiian should be a PO01.

Someone showed off this coin about three years before I purchased one just like it. I was on a quest when I saw that thread (from about five years ago!).

I searched everywhere and I mean, everywhere!, searching eBay sometimes two or three times a day. Finally after three years one appears. I manually snipe it (at three times what it closed at), wanting it so bad.

It remains in a cabinet, proudly displayed since.

Passion pays off- and that is the sport of numismatics.

Ok, Ok, Ok, theres some coins here that are just AMAZING! Every coin here is a trophy coin in my eyes.

First, I am in love with that Sheldon 1797! Just WOW!

The 1792 Half Dimeis a stunner! I love 1792 Half Dimes.
The Double Eagle dated 1927-S, HOLY CRAP BATMAN! Thats a hunk of gold!

And finally, Im a sucker for the Ike error's. Sweet coins.

That 1895 IHC has some cool color and a sweet cam.

You guys have some KILLER trophy coins for sure.

This would qualify as such. Last year of operation for the Charlotte mint & the only denomination produced that year. The Confederate authorities seized the mint in Apr 1861; however it is believed nearly 900 of the total 6,879 minted were produced in May 1861, making them a CSA product. As such, this date represents the swan-song for the facility.
