In Beijing right now
Where should I go to buy some US coins?
I have today and Sunday off before I have to start the event and meetings I am here for.
Just finished Korea in a day and flew here.
Beautiful Asiana flight to Beijing and it wasn't even close to full so they moved the business class folks up to 1st class for free. WOW!!!!! It was awesome...they had to drag me, kicking and screaming, off the plane as I didn't want to leave the first class seats. Stupid flight was early too, so less than 90 minutes sitting there. I did make friends with the stewardesses though.....I had a bag of doritos and one of them saw them and made a comment so I gave them to her....she was my friend for the rest of the flight.
Now, I and a co-worker are trying to figure out where to go in Beijing and since there are so many counterfeits in the US, from China, I was hoping to find them here to see what they look like and cost...would be interesting, I think.
So, if anyone knows, let me know...would love to do some coining while I am here

If so, I was there today...no coins...lots of haggling and aggressive women selling everything else though (suits, shoes, purses, watches, toys, etc)

If I find some that I know are legit, I will.
Most of the ones I saw were "pretty" wooden and some kind of stonelike ones.

Went to the Antique market.....lots of cool things...open market.....A LOT of counterfeit Chinese coins. Maybe some real ones (very low low quality) mixed in, but easy to see vast majority were counterfeit. I didn't take any of my Chinese colleagues (it's Sunday and I didn't want to interfere with their family time) and the people aat this market don't have much in the English category.
Went to the Pearl Market after that....iphone for $70ish anyone? Pearl necklaces (that are actual pearls
Oh yeah...3rd floor, one of the first on shops I saw with coins (Chinese) had a VERY cute girl working in it and her English was good, so I asked "no US coins?" to which she pulled out a few books of them that were buried under some stacks of other things. She started out almost 300RMB (exchange rate is ~6.77 to 1) and I started laughing and said "ummm..yeah...I know a little better".
So, who was it that wanted the 1804?
I got a couple others too just for the fun (and learning) in it. It was pretty easy to see they were counterfeit but I could understand someone who doesn't know the coins to pay more and think they are getting a deal. My friend made that mistake a few years ago thinking he was getting me some good deals.
Saw the 1865 Washington Dollar (Silver dollar size with Washington Quarter details), 1900 SAE silver dollar. 1906 SAE silver dollar. The rest were more accurate but not in metal content nor actual look.
Overall, I am thankful for the Pearl Market recommendation, not just for the coins to look at and get an idea of what it is here, but also for some of the trinkets i bought for family and friends.
Once I get pictures, I will upload a few. They don't let you take pictures inside (at least, if you ask) so I didn't do that.

I picked up counterfeit Morgans for about $4US at a tourist trap. A lot of places have these dishes/boxes of coins - chinese, US, maybe some other countries, but it's all just as fake as the merchandise in those markets. If you find anything genuine, it won't be cheaper than you can find in the US. Not worth the risk.
I imagine the olympic merchandise stores are closed by now... There was some cool gold and silver in there, but premiums were super high.
I'm in Beijing right now. I am planning on hitting the Pearl Market on Saturday, although The Man might summon me to Perth this weekend instead.

If so, what type of below U.S. market value are you paying.
<< <i>Don't breathe the drywall! >>
I just got a email that many homes built in Florida in the past 4 years have that Chinese Gypsum Drywall.. They figured that the problem was that the Chinese Cargo ships sat at sea to long waiting for approval to dock and the drywall got waterlogged.. Thus, now the Chinese drywall causes health problems. Huge lawsuit..
I don't think it was the chinese govt fault, our U.S. let the crap in, so we should take some responsiblity..
P.S. The problems with the Chinese Drywall is it smells like rotten eggs..The drywall fragments will get into the air conditioning coils and make them rust, in turn breakdowns in your system.. Also other factors are, nose bleeds and heart failure, lung problems.
<< <i>Are there really deals to be had in these places you guys mention?

I hear they pay for em with Monopoly Money!

Silk may have had some, but I didn't notice.
I did the outdoor market, saw a TON of counterfeit Chinese coins, but didn't ask (it was too chilly that day) anyone...and the English there is less "advanced" than Pearl/Silk.
Quickwing was right on the money with the 3rd floor of Pearl Market being the place......pretty young lady about 4-5 stores in on the right hand side, as you go up the stairs. Nothing on top, except counterfeit Chinese coins, but when I asked her about US coins, she pulled out a few books of them...
