So I went to 6 Banks and Walmart today looking for 2009 dimes and nickels and........

NO dice, nada, nothing, not a trace of any new 09 coins. NW Ohio is high and dry of new coins. No "pennies" either. The dimes and nickels are going to be scarce coins! Most of tellers were happy to sell me coin as they were apparently flush with newly turned in coin. The terrible economy has led to numerous people resorting to rolling coin for much needed cash. All locations said they no longer get new coins because the public is oversupplying them with rolled coin. Back to your regularly scheduled program

A lot of nice coins removed from circulation as well as gem states issues
are appearing in circulation. One can put together some pretty impressive
sets right now.
A couple weeks back I got an AU '79-D type "d" reverse quarter. There
probably aren't 1000 nicer of these in existence and most are worn down
to an unattractive F/ VF now days.
i looked on ebay and there are NONE. they say that the mintage of log cabin lincoln cents is less than 1 per person in the US population but this year`s quarters look to be way less than that. JMO
edited to add: to clarify, no 2009 nickels or dimes on ebay.
I'm actually about to save a search on ebay for them and have ebay email me when they first show up. I can't wait to see how much people pay initially for these things!

Can you point me to the "over priced" bags of nickels and dimes dated 2009?
<< <i>This might make it more likely that the 2009 nickels and dimes will get absorbed into circulation. They might not appear until 2010, after the hoopla over the low mintages has died down. >>
I'm now receiving 2006-dated coins that are clearly just now being released into circulation.
60 years into this hobby and I'm still working on my Lincoln set!

I was just making an assumption that at some point they will offer them and this would be the only way to get them.

This isn't unusual.
Under normal conditions the mint and FED rotate their coin stocks and coins
in storage the longest are always the first to be shipped out. While some
coins will quickly be entirely dipersed into circulation it's not unusual for some
FED branch or the mint to require up to about three years to turn over their
entire supply. There can be new coin included with what's in storage.
There really haven't been "normal conditions" since about 1997. The mint
first put extra brand new quarters into the system in case there was excessive
hoarding of the new states issues and then they moved large percentages of
the states coins to the head of the line when they started in '99.
At that time there was something of a glut of old coins in storage and these
didn't get worked out until around '05 apparently.
The number of coins flowing back to the FED might not be so huge as it seems.
First off it's not like there's lots of old silver coming back displacing coins back
into storage. The number of clad coins held by the public as collectible is very
small. Other than bicentennial coins and a few 1965 coins almost all of these
has been set aside only since 1999 when public attention was directed to cir-
culating coinage again.
I've been telling you for years now that the distribution of coins in circulation
is becoming skewed wityh the scarcer dates disappearing at a faster clip than
common dates. There is also an attenuation at the high end of the grading
scale. In 1998 the grade range of something like a 1969 quarter in circulation
formed a nearly perfect bell curve with the typical coin in VG+. Over the next
ten years this bell curve lost the right hand side while better example were
being removed prefentially to poor example. Now it appears a lot of these in
F and VF- are coming back into circulation. But this has to be kept in perspec-
tive. We're not talking about billions of coins because these simply aren't that
common. There are not nearly enough of these coins involved to have a dram-
atic effect on the need to mint new coins.
The cause of the reduction is two-fold. Primarily it's the result of reduced econ-
nomic activity reducing the need for new coin. Secondarily it's caused by and
increased rate of redemption by the public. People tend to hoard all their coins
for ten to twenty months since individually they no longer have any value. This
is an ongoing process and it's quite rare that these hoards last longer than 36
months. This can be seen by the incidence of high grade coins in circulation. If
such hoards lasted longer then there would be more high grade coins.
With many peoples' finances in tatters they are forced to find cash wherever it
might be. This means the $150 five month accumulation won't survive to become
a 24 month accumulation for trip to Vegas.
This effect isn't huge either and is highly self limiting; the average size and age
of the publics' change jar can only drop so low. Since it accounts for less than
about 10% of the coins in circulation the effect should last no more than perhaps
four years. Of course with cash transactions continuing to decline the need for
new coins can drop and stretch this out considerably.

No business strikes. There are a few listings for proof 2009 Jeffs and Roosies, but no business strikes. I would think if any were out there, someone would have rushed to put them on eBay. I suspect the demand for 2009 Mint Sets will be quite a bit higher than normal.
brand new coins from previous years have yet to be fully dispersed
so why would they flood banks with brand new ones minted last
month.

Just today, I went to my bank and picked up $10 in cents rolls and $10 in dime rolls. The teller said they were not new rolls.
I took them anyway.
$8 face of the dimes were 1960-1964 ROOSIES!
People are bringing back their old coins to the banks!
Banks do not need new coins.
I did see rolls of the 2009 Kennedys in the case. Did anyone get any of them yet?
WS
but I'm writing the Mint asking if they might consider selling nickels and dimes on their web site
i was thinking a set with both 2009 dimes and nickels from each mint of 4 rolls total
with this years low mintage - would anybody else think this would be a hot seller for the mint
Snowman
Should we all go to our local banks and start buy a few bricks each of nickels and dimes to help get them moving?
Good point on the roll-searching though. It's been a number of months now since I picked up nickels to go through, I
think I'll have to start up again.

so now what ?
I'm going to South Florida tomorrow... I will check a couple banks on the way!
Dang, this is frustrating. Does anyone have a bank that will do a smaller order? Has anyone tried going this route to get 2009 nickels and dimes? Do you think it's worth trying? I'm tempted, but don't want to end up drowning in unwanted rolls.

Hard to believe, but one, single 2009 P dime sold on ebay the other night for $49.02, and he just said the condition was "in excellent shape" - not even unc.!!

The local banks don't have any 09 coinage, except for cents, which I bought 12 rolls of the "rail splitters".
My sisternlaw, mother, brother, cousins, are all on the hunt for 09 coinage. Offered them double face for anything 09,
uncirculated that is. What would a full brick of 09 dimes go for, right now on Ebay?

I can imagine it would be hard to know since single dimes are selling for over $15 each. Is it realistic to think that a brick of dimes would sell for 10x face ($5,000????) or single rolls selling for $50-100 each???
Just spotted some Garda Trucks yesterday. Might give em a call.
But this year the 2009 cents are showing up one or two a week and last weekend I got a Puerto Rico quarter in change. I gave the PR quarter to a co-worker who is from PR. He thought it was neat.
I've already mentioned getting four rolls of the new cents from the bank.
I guess I will look around for the nickels and dimes.

I don't know - they're selling for 70 bucks a pop on the bay.
<< <i>Anybdoy know how many number of 2008 Uncirc sets were sold last year. It may give an indication as to how many nickels and dimes will be in the uncirc. sets. You do know the mint sets are not the "classic" business strikes, right? They are "satin proof"/"specimen"/etc......
Been that way for a few years now, so, unless the mint changes that, the only way to get true business strikes are from commerce (banks/change/etc)
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Funny thing is, I haven't seen a single Log Cabin Lincoln in my area! Not sure what's up with that, but at this point I will take any 2009 coinage I can get at face value!

The Unc sets are satin finish and are not considered Unc anymore even in the price guides. They have there own listing section for prices in the guides. I agree the mintage will be high due to the uninformed buyer thinking they are getting uncirculated coins.

I really dislike the idea that the only way to get them is through rolls................coins that went through a counting coin rolling machine. There's got to be a way of getting a scoop from the larger bags.

they said they have delivered hundreds millions of these to the Federal Reserve already
i guess they didnt look how many they were making this year - go figure ????

you understand that to get into a bag they have to go through a COUNTING MACHINE, right???
<< <i>In the letter it states nickels and dimes are only available "in numismatic coin sets". If this true are the '09 nickel and dimes selling on ebay an accidental release? >>
That was a canned letter. I'll bet if you wrote asking for seated liberty dimes, you'd get the same response.

with some of the words missing... the letter was glued to the envelope. i guess the mint was in hurry to mail it.
your probably right "stevereecy" ... its look like parts are copied and pasted
bypass collectors and get right into pocket change. This will mean
lower grade specimens for most collectors and the problem will be
especially acute for the lower denominations which don't spread
out as fast and for those collectors farther from the release points.
I had missed the letter. It was apparently written for anyone com-
plainng about the availability or price of current coin.
There were a couple of 40%'s in the bunch. She was happy, I was happy.

I'll personally be glad if this is the case. It makes the issue a lot more interesting than just having the entire supply squirreled away as rolls.

I agree except it will be disappointing if I have to settle for a nice AU
in my "from circulation" collection. It's pretty much all choice and gem
after 1996 and an AU would really stand out. There probably will be
many tens of thousands of collectors in the boat.
We're starting to see a few newer coins released here in NW Indiana
so there's hope for me.
