The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
Coins with toning show their colors best when the lighting is "just so". And in a flip, that "just so" lighting also tends to create bright reflective glare right where you want to view the coin.
I can see how a coin could look rather different in a flip than completely raw. Heck, one has to go through photographic conniptions in order to capture the real color of a slabbed coin due to the glare.
I can also see how a seller would be afraid of folks switching coins. So much paranoia in this hobby. Something about coin collecting makes us create all sorts of horrible what-if situations in our head.
I've returned one coin that was in a flip from a seller that had such a policy. I removed the coin to weigh it. It was an underweight counterfeit. After one call, it ended well. Some issues are more important than a sellers policy. Communication is really all that is needed.

When you spend a large sum of money on a coin that is a-t and cleaned , the thought of being scammed did enter my mind, no question. But the seller did return my money, there for it's not a scam. Why is that so hard to understand? And I would also like to say~ I have never responded to a forum member the way some of you guys have with me , like a pack of jackals! I'll look at this forum in a different light for now on if I come back at all. Thanks
The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
I think everybody was honest. Well, except Joe. His first intention was to be deceptive. He caved in though and that's a good thing. But his tossing around of the word scammer was quite unnecessary before having spoken with the seller. While I can understand him being upset, I don't see how he would think he would receive a more positive reaction on a forum that discusses the "high moral road" often times in the coin industry. Rips, YOU SUCKs, dealers stealing from children, grown pot belly old men stealing from dealers at shows [literally], etc...
Chalk it up as a lesson. I agree with him having removed the coin from the holder. I too have done this but was not in a dilemma of whether or not I would tell the seller. Instead, I took the coin, threw it in a mylar flip rather than a stapled holder, contacted the seller told him of the hairlines on the peace and that I completely disagreed with the coin being BUPQGEM+++ and whatever else and that his lighting technique totally masked the coin [which it did] and he said just send er on back.
As has been said, a quality coin to one may be disgust for another. I wouldn't block Joe...obviously his horrible 'forum experience' goes beyond just what happened on the forum. Bad days occur and people, especially grown ups , have a tendency to take the Interwebz too SRSLY! *laugh* So no hard feelings from me Joe. But you taught me what NOT TO DO in a moral dilemma on these here forums! And I thank you for that. Stick around, your posts have for the most part been enjoyable.
I haven't read this entire thread but I bought this coin on ebay from ernie who has the "you can return if you don't take out of the flip" policy:
It looked pretty darn good. I looked at it very carefully and could find no problem with it other than a tiny bit of verdigris. After I got it out of the holder and was able to get better light on it, I was able to see this:
I lived by the terms of the auction and didn't even ask about returning it. But I learned that it is very hard to see hairlines in a flip.
But I would like to hear it in no uncertain terms, you are calling GSC scammers, right?

All of this because you brought it here before telling GSC that the coin looked different once outside the flip. The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
That FW cent is disgusting, and the seller likely knew damn well it was a problem coin. The only reason sellers have the "in the holder" policy is to prevent "switch outs", but if a buyer explains that the problems were not apparent until the coin was out of the holder, I would think most would take the coin back if it is obvious to the seller that it is the same coin when they get it back, especially if you let the seller know the situtation in advance.
Bottom line lesson from this thread? High volume eBay raw coin sellers such as GSC and ernie routinely engage in "white collar" overgrading and/or pass on problem coins as non-problem. Most of these coins "stick" becuase the recipients do not know how to grade or find out too late.
The rteurn policies are there to protect the seller, you fail to comply then you are not entitled to a return...I know Ebay sucks with these poilcies and so does Paypal but unfortunately you play by Ebay rules and you must pay by their rules
I am sorry, I stand corrected, you're calling Marc Langston (Rare Coins) a scammer. Though they are not 100% Positive Feedback in their eBay 'career' (1 Neg; 1 Neutral), I would say they are don't look like scammers to me. Now that I've corrected myself......
Are you calling Marc Langston a scammer?
Those where your words, not mine.
Oh yeah, and I am a sicko & don't have anything better to do.
Sorry crazyhounddog, but when you bid on that coin, you consented to the terms and conditions stated in the auction. You then violated those terms and conditions (the ones you agreed to when you placed your bid), and then came into this forum to whine about YOUR breach of contract. You are someone who I would not want to do business with at all. If you absolutely HAD to open the flip, then you should not have bid on that coin without making some sort of prior agreement with the seller concerning that specific issue.
bought a raw coin as a possible UNC (kind of fuzzy photos), and fortunately did not pay near-UNC prices.
he bought it as as UNC "many years ago" and sold it to me as an UNC. (he'd been around long enough to know what he had there; just business -as-usual, I guess: PASS IT ON .... probably didn't even figure he was doing anything wrong, if not "grey")
kept it; doubt that I've be able to sell it even as a respectable AU.
WILL WORK FOR CENTS, QUARTERS, HALVES, DOLLARS....
Joe/crazyhounddog, You have my sympathies over forum feedback. It can be hurtful, unforgiving, brutally honest. Personally I feel it was too tough on you.
But you should spend a little time looking over your responses. I think you reacted too quickly and said things from emotion. Many of us have been under fire here. And the smartest of us have said nothing, or admitted mistakes early. Imagine how members would have reacted had you immediately said, "I'm an idiot. I've learned an important lesson I won't forget. Don't do what I did!"
Of course it would have made for a boring thread. The forum lions would have had to look elsewhere for the weak and lame wildebeasts.
Have bought lots of 2x2 holdered coins and yes, some of them have been junk. I've learned the hard way, that you have to learn to be adept at evaluating the coin in the 2x2 holder thru the cello. You judge its "ok" and you bust it out, you have to be prepared to own it. Fortunately, there are some sellers that will take it back, and unfortunately, there are some that won't. You have to accept that when you take it out of the 2x2, its yours, and if you then decide its junk, you can blame no one but yourself for the failure. Learning from that failure is called experience. It can be hard evaluating raw coins in 2x2's but like any other kind of grading, experience builds confidence.
Craig If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!
