My Trip to Dahlonega...pics inside!!!

This weekend I went up to Georgia for my Dad's wedding in Helen and once I realized that Helen was only about 15 miles from Dahlonega I immediately set up plans to make a quick visit. On Easter Sunday I checkout out of my Hotel in Gainesville, GA and made a beeline for Dahlonega to grab some breakfast and see the sites. The town is very small and you will find the Dahlonega Gold Museum right in the heart of downtown....

The weather was beautiful and the museum had a lot of interesting artifacts and the short movie they showed on the history of the Georgia Gold Rush was quite interesting.

Here are some shots of inside:

and once we viewed the museum we got the fever to go to the Crisson Gold Mine and do some panning for gold and gemstones...... image

Considering it wasn't a vacation per say, we did manage to squeeze in a few activities before having to head back to Orlando. I got a souvenir coin from the Crisson Mine that I will add to this post when I get home and me and the kids found a lot of nice gemstones though no gold. image

Whats the history behind the Cherokee weights?

    Great Photo's!

I guess this is one place I won't have to visit now!

    NOT!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

This is a great service to the whole community of collectors. It's this type of thread that keeps me posting no matter how sick our world is. This place ROCKS.

How do you pronounce Dahlonega ?

Yes that is Awesome, nice to get the family out...those days fade too fast once those kids grow.

so THATS how you say the word, eh?

Isnt there a building built on the old foundations of the mint?

It was a beautiful day on Sunday in Dahlonega. Glad you enjoyed your visit.

<< <i>Isnt there a building built on the old foundations of the mint? >>

Yes, the mint building burned in 1878 a few years after it was donated to North Georgia College. The college built Price Memorial Hall in its place right on the old mint foundation.

Wow, does that bring back memories. In 2001 the ANA was held in Atlanta. My wife and I like to combine coins with golf, so we spent a few days after the ANA in Helen (not recommended), and drove to Dalonaga to tour the museum and walk around the town. When I saw the complete set of Dalonaga gold coins my jaw dropped. It is really impressive. We also went panning for gold at the mine outside of the town. All in all a highly recommended place to visit if you happen to be in the area. Thanks for bringing the memory back. Great pics!!

Native folk from Dahlonega are are often called "Nuggets". They call us folk up in the mountains "Hillbillies".
