Found a 1953-D Lincoln today and wasn't scarred up. I believe that was my first find of a wheatie on the ground. It was in front of an electric company where I paid my bill. image

Yes. Always have and hopefully, always will.

Funny, neither one of my boys will pick up a penny and they really need money. image

I pick up pennies and any other coin on the ground every since I read the story about the woman who picked up a 1969-S DDO on a parking lot.

    I do.

Today I went into the WaWa parking lot and on the way back to the car...seen a rather brownish one on the ground, turned out to be a 47D.

People probably look and think "That guys driving a Range Rover...and hes picking up pennies" yup, 12 mpg...you pick up penniesimage

I found 6 pennies and one dime today. One was a pre-82 copper. So far today and beginning Jan 1st, I have found over $38.92 of dropped change around my community. This is from not just searching or setting time aside to find coins. This is just doing my everyday routines. Not bad for just picking up free money on the ground. image

Up until a few years ago, I actually thought it would be bad luck not to pick up any coin I saw, as it might be a sign that I forgot where I came from (my family was borderline poor when I was growing up). Then for whatever reason, some combination of realizing it wasn't worth the effort and being a mild germ-o-phobe kicked in and now if it ain't a quarter, I ain't bendin over. Of course I'm sure quarters have as much or more germs on them but it becomes risk vs reward at the 25 cent level. That doesn't make sense at all. I don't know what is sillier, picking them up in the first place, or now only if it's a quarter. I really dislike change in general and dump it from my pockets at every opportunity. My wife hoards it and cashes it in every so often. I never look at the dates. If I did I would feel like I was still at work.

Actually, I find the most money in the poorest neighborhoods. I guess when they have never worked for it, then it's no biggie to throw it on the ground.image

    I do once in awhile.

When I was 13 (1960's) I was along way from home on my bicycle, it was getting dark and I had a flat tire. I decided to make a phonecall to my parents but I only had 9 cents in my pocket. Instead of begging I prayed and when I was finished praying I opened my eyes with my head still bowed and there looking straight down was a road kill penny right at my feet. I still have that penny!!

I think it's a generational thing. Those over 50 are more likely to pick up cents than those under 30.

I pick them all up even if they have been scraped and scratched to oblivion. The best places to look are in convenience store parking lots and near the vacuum at a self-serve or automated car wash.

I found two pennies today. One was a 2008 and still bright and shinny. The other one I would even put in my pocket. It was so corroded and disfigured, you could't see any date. I just know it is after 1982, since it was zinc. image

I never pass up a penny. Or any other denomination for that matter. I walk a lot in the summer. Last year I walked about 400 miles, a 4 mile route around home over and over. I found a little over $3.00 in change, including a $1 bill. I do the same when I ride my bike. If I see something I stop for it or wait till the next time around and pick it up. It's amazing how much money is along our sidewalks and roads that people pass by every day.

I found what looked like a penny on the street last year.

It turned out to be a Scientology membership pin.

    image

The front says: "INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SCIENTOLOGISTS" / "PATRON"
The back has a flattened pin and "18KT"

Not something one finds every day.

It may be a generational thing. I remember picking up coke bottles along the side of the road when they were worth a couple of pennies for returns. I always pick up any change I see!

I pick up any change that I see on the ground. Think about it - free money to exert less effort than tieing your shoe? I don't see anything wrong with this...
