How would you handle this.........***UPDATE***

relicsncoinsrelicsncoins Posts: 8,276 ✭✭✭✭✭
I put a best offer on this coin almost 2 weeks ago. The coin has not shown up. At 10 days I sent a polite email asking the status of shipping and if there was a tracking number. There was no response. I've since sent 2 other emails asking the same questions and again no response. He has a 100% feedback rating and over 1000 transactions and therefor is a veteran of ebay. I don't think it's to much to ask to respond to my emails and let me know what is going on. My plan at this point is to wait a couple more days. If I get no response and the coin does not show up, then I really don't see any other option but to file with paypal and to neg the seller. It's too bad, because I really wanted and needed that coin for my set.

If at 10 days was the 21st (Saturday) you may give him a couple more days. He could have been gone for the weekend. You have been more than reasonable though.

I've though of that. They did have to accept my best offer though or can you setup some kind of auto accept if the offer is a certain percentage of the ask price. If that is the case, they could've easily sent an email stating they were going on vacation and they would ship as soon as they return.

Wow, that sucks, and it's a nice coin too!

I had a similar sounding scenario from a similar type eBay seller not too long ago:
About 5 weeks ago I bought a coin on eBay and after 10 days and no answers to my questions from the seller I filed a refund with PayPal.
A couple days after I filed for the refund the seller reponded back to saying he had computer problems.
In the end everything was fine.

I'd wait 2 more days and if nothing by then, then file with PayPal.
  • I would file a claim with Ebay or Paypal about the coin, is sounds like it may be lost

There aren't many places in the world that don't have internet access. No excuse (other than death of course) for an eBay seller to not answer e-mails.

If you paid with PayPal you will have to file your claim with PayPal. The seller offers the PayPal Buyer protection plan so you must follow the rules for that plan when making your claim. You have 30 days after you paid for the item to initiate a claim with PayPal.

<< <i>No excuse (other than death of course) for an eBay seller to not answer e-mails. >>

    Sure there is. Here's two:

    1) Buyer's emails are not getting through to seller's email account.
    2) Seller is unable (for whatever reason) to access his email account at this time.

Try contacting the seller through the "Ask a Question" link on the item listing page. Even if the seller is having email problems, he can probably still get to his "My eBay" page, and can see your question there.

A week is long enough without any contact. Whatever, any/no reason, let Payfee remind seller with a dispute and after a couple days, push it up to a claim.
  • StaircoinsStaircoins Posts: 2,590 ✭✭✭✭

I would get the seller's contact information (specifically, the phone number) through ebay, and give them a friendly call to check on the status of the shipment. I think you've waited long enough.

This is only true if you didn't use a credit card. If you use a cc, you can file a chargeback with them immediately and get your account credited.

I just returned from vacation, and that is my first thought. I did however, before leaving, email anyone I was involved with on ebay to inform them of such. If your seller left for two or however many weeks without informing his customers than he isn't a good business person.

If it accepted your offer within a minute then it probably was automatic. The seller might be away. Look to see if he has given any feedback since then. If you get nothing in the next few days then contact paypal. Good Luck image

There are many legitimate reasons for lack of communication....

I had an in state buyer on ebay.. we exchanged 6 or 7 emails so he could save $1.21 sales tax by sending me a resale certificate. The last email I got from him on March 5 was that he needed my mailing address so he could send me the form. Then next day I get a window for a fake antivirus software alert, and it installs malware whether you click on YES or NO. At that point the computer shows my actual McAfee suite disabled, and all websites redirect to porn sites. Plus System Restore had turned itself off, the CD/R-W drive would read but not write, so I could not back up my files. . And Dell's restore disks only mirror the harddrive when it was new, so I had to send off for a Windows XP disc which Microsoft does not like to sell anymore, so I could do a Windows repair that let me back up my files, then a full hard disk wipe, then a new installation of Windows from the SP1 disk, which required about 200 updates to bring it current. Then an install of Norton 2009 and reinstalling all my applications, wireless metwork, etc.

Luckily I had sent out everything that ended on ebay except for the $15 coin that I was waiting for the resale form, and it was waiting to go. Then on March 17 about 8 pm my son in law gets a phone call at our house from buyer of said $15 coin. I had already gone to bed after taking a Topamax for migraine (wonder why) but the caller insisted on talking to me. I explained about the computer problem, son in law says I told him I can't HELP you, which the buyer heard as F**K you.

Next day I checked my email (computer was finally up) Buyer told me to keep the F**King coin. I tried to refund his Paypal payment, but was met with the Paypal resolution center that my account (with $1700 in it) was locked until I "resolve" a pending issue... that is, I issue the buyer a full refund.

    Then from the buyer:

I filed one back in December on a Seller. I thought it was 30 days, maybe its changed since. Regardless, the point is you don't need to rush into anything. As a buyer you still have rights to exercise beyond just a couple of weeks. Opening up the dispute process in and of itself may motivate the Seller to perform!

One thing to consider JJ, I know this is rare, but I filed a complaint on a seller that after 14 days had not responded to my emails only to find out that he had suffered a heart attack and his wife knew nothing about Ebay or its working. Of course, I withdrew my complaint and within another week I had my coin and all was well. So, there can be extenuating circumstances.

  • I've heard some strange ones in my day. Hospital, death, vacation are all possibilities. I once got an email from the seller of some coin I'd won on eBay several days earlier. According to him, he got kicked out of his house. Don't know if it was a wife or girlfriend that kicked him out. But all his stuff was still in the house and he didn't know when he was getting it back. And it took him several days to be able to get online. He simply refunded my money no problem. Didn't bother me since it was a cheap widget. I figure you can't make up a story like that and so I moved on. Perhaps we should send orie (the alleged marriage counselor) to see if everything is okay with the relicsncoins case, eh?image

I'm not sure I'd wait 40 days, but certainly more than 2 weeks. Given the seller's feedback, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.

I just checked my new Seller's dashboard on ebay....my 30 day DSRs have dropped from 4.9 to 4.7. The jerk must have given
me all zeroes when the transaction was not even completed! I sell most of my expensive stuff with free shipping, so

Good news.........The seller finaly contaced me, he unexpectedly had to go out of town. He did mail the package the day after after I purchased it and provided me a tracking number. Apparently the USPS attempted delivery 10 days ago but didn't bother to leave a notice on my door or my mailbox, and the coin has been sitting at the post office this entire time. I went down last night and picked it up. Will post photos later today.

    Good to hear.

Sometimes, life just happens, and you have to do the best that you can. A few years ago, I got a phone call at work telling me that I needed to come home NOW- my mom was in intensive care, and the outlook was not good. I barely had time to run home and throw some clothes in a bag and get to the airport, never mind dealing with eBay. I was out of town for a little over a week and didn't get back until after the funeral. During that time, eBay was way down on the list of priorities. Even if I had had the time, I wasn't in a position to do anything about my eBay stuff, as all my records and auction info was a thousand miles away. Fortunately, this was before PayPal, so I didn't have too many frantic "Where's my coin and why aren't you answering me?" emails to deal with when I got back.

Bottom line (this is in general and not directed at any specific poster)- before you decide to rip someone a new one for ignoring your emailed questions about where your package is and when was it mailed, you might want to consider that there can be good reasons for not getting an immediate reply and give the guy the benefit of the doubt. There's plenty of time for piling on after you have all the facts in hand.
