My apologies to the entire forum - and a picture of my OTHER 1922
PutTogether

I never meant to start a war, or even a meaningful debate. I just had a spare coin I thought might be a good to addition to someone else's collection. I didn't mean to alienate or frustrate anyone. I just thought posting a couple of accurate pictures of a coin along with my best shot at a description and a return privilege was good enough. I've been around the boards a little while, and some of you know me personally. I, and hopefully others, can assure you that I am NOT a rip off artist type guy, and would never take unfair advantage of a fellow collector.
I'd also like to take a moment to thank the entire membership here for it's continual effort to educate and inform. From coins to history, math to manners, I have learned a lot here, and forged some decent friendships. Thanks to everyone.
And now..... in case anyone was wondering..... here is a pic of my OTHER 1922 Peace Dollar from my toned set. This one I am keeping - the other is for sale. This one is an NGC 62

I would advise you to be careful buying toned peace dollars for any huge premium unless they are "all there", especially in this market.
Speaking of, I am buying a small collection of old fat slab Peace toners in a week or so.

No need for you to apologize, most interesting thing to happen here in a while.
We should be thanking you for the entertainment!
Also an excellent example of why I don't post very much. It's usually better to keep your mouth shut.

It's mostly fun for the hoi polloi. You would not want to get your white shoes dirty over there.

I saw the whole thing. No need for you to apologize whatsoever.
That BST thread should be a Forum Case Study for years to come. I think all of us could learn much from that thread.

As for the OPs peace. Both very nice. I collect toned peace as well and i know how hard it is. I like the 2nd one better but the first one is unique in that it has toning ive only seen in washngton quarters. Very unique.

I just read the BST thread and I agree with everything RYK said.

<< <i>I fully agree that the OP owes nobody any apologies! However, im not certain that anyone from that thread owes any apologies either. The coin was listed in a free and public forum. The BST allows members to post to any and all threads there, it does not just allow the OP to post. Therefore, I still view it as permissible that some may want to add comments to a BST listing whether they are praise or criticism. It is almost EXACTLY the same as when some of you link us an eBay listing, and everyone jumps in with an opinion. The only difference is that the person selling that coin on eBay may not even know the item is being scrutinized, and therefore has no chance to defend said item. At least in here, the seller can defend himself and the coin for sale. The above commentary is just fact. Now for an OPINION. That coin is not attractively toned whatsoever. It looks like a coin doctor's nightmare. The color looks like it was just splashed on with some type of chemical. There is no progression between colors at all, and IMHO, its simply not enough that a Peace dollar is "toned" to warrant 10x book value, but rather needs to be "attractively toned". >>
Nothing like an ebay listing in that negative comments don't show up on the seller's page. My thought is that if you don't like it, don't buy and otherwise stay out of the thread. Just becuz you don't find the toning appealing doesn't meant that someone else might like it. This was not a thread to ask others what they thought of it, it was an offer to sale. I am sure a prospective buyer is just as capable of making a decision about the coin as you are and doesn't need or want your input into that decision.

Nothing is ever so black and white.
Should you speak up if the coin is a fake? Or is that none of your business?
What if you had a bad experience with the seller and failed to get your coin? Should you warn others?
What if the seller is known for juicing pictures? Should you speak out and post in the thread or should
we allow other forum members to get the works?
What is the price is so insane that it is laughable and maybe there is some newb that falls for it? Should we speak up?

Sounds good in theory, but it'll never work as long as there are people who think their opinions are relevant to deals they're not involved in.

I think that you are mixing facts with opinions. It is someone's opinion that the coin is ugly or too expensive, but if the seller had bounced a check to you, that would be a fact. If the coin was counterfeit or stolen, and either could be proven, it would be a fact. If the seller failed to send you a coin in a transaction (and you could prove it), that would be a fact. If the coin was being advertised as problem-free original, and it just came out of an ANACS tooled-cleaned slab at the last Heritage sale, it is a fact that there is false advertising (though this one is a little trickier). All of these facts should be posted to the thread as a warning to others. In this case, what was posted were negative opinions, and these are not welcome by most sellers.
I have said before that there are two ways that we could easily fix the BST:
1. Impose a $1/post fee. A seller would not hesitate to pay $1 to sell his coin(s), but would be incentivized to combine threads and would be less likely to ttt threads, etc. Also, buddies would be less likely to provide courtesy bumps and foes would be less likely to trash the coin, if they had to pay to do so. If $1 did not work, we could up it to $2.
2. Impose a one post for day rule on the BST. That way, it is less likely for someone to provide commentary, and it would be impossible to post multiple threads or bump your own thread.

Another problem arises from the many types of computer monitors and how the contrast and brightness settings are adjusted. Monitors also have different color standards especially for older monitors.
Having built a few computers, I have always found it interesting how an image can change from one monitor to another. They may be brighter or darker. Years ago when I learned of this, it drove me nuts to think that I would need to redo all the pictures to my coins. but I had the original negatives to all my pictures. Early on in the photography of my coins, I did learn after a couple of years that the adjustments I made to the coin's pictures were too bright on other monitors. The reason was having a monitor that was not bright enough. I was constantly trying to make the coins look like what I was seeing in hand. If the contrast was used to increase a color's effect, it would look very juiced on a newer brighter monitor.
So it is possible that the seller in question may not have known or was unaware of it at one time that his adjustments made with his monitor would have a profound effect on other monitors. But my point is, it is a very difficult task getting the coin right with a monitor. For anyone who photograph coins for sales, perhaps there should be a disclamer concerning the brightness, color and contrast of the coins they're selling.
Well, I apologize for popping everyone's bubble.....again.

<< <i>I can't help wondering if the coin in question has the colors the original seller photographed. I have a few heavily toned coins with little flash but with the right light and angle the colors can be captured although this can be difficult to do.

You do have a good point, I check my photo's on two monitors that give it very different saturations and I try to make them somewhere in between the two monitors hoping it looks right on other peoples monitors.
