I thought they were just low grade Ikes in PCGS holders and were worth the asking price. I was going to give them to my 9 year old for his
'collection' but maybe they should go in mine.

<< <i>Wow, was the guy that sold them blind? Nice Job! >>
No, but everyone else was, including me. I walked by them several times before deciding any coin in a PCGS holder must be worth $2. It didn't occur to me until driving home that I may have read about these here.
I also got a $5 parking ticket and a 1925 Peace in PCGS MS66 but I have to go back and get the Peace tomorrow due to lack of pocket change.

I could see it, if they were in the older holders that didn't designate the 3 different 1972-P Varieties...But
it CLEARLY says TYPE 2 on the label!!
CONGRATS!!....and that deserves a YOU SUCK!

"The red book lists 72 T2 @ $6.50 in EF40 "
And reality lists these at a minimum of $50 each for the 55's and perhaps $100 for that AU58 in PCGS slabs!
In 1971 and 1972, both the Obverse and Reverse were different for the 40% Proof Silver coinage than the Copper Nickel budiness strikes. The most noticeable difference is in the existance of a non-serifed R (in the word LIBERTY) and a different hair designg on the obverse while the reverses sported higher relief Eagles and an interestingly designed earth. For whatever reason, the islands off the coast of Florida are depicted as incused lines on the Proof coin while the business strike coin had globs of metal.
For some reason, which is speculated to be an experiment by the US Mint, a proof reverse die ended up on the copper nickel business strike production floor. This is what the 1972 Type 2 IKE is. Estimated mintages are anywhere from 90,000 to 130,000 coins and it is considered "rare" by many. My experience indicates that there are other more "rare" IKEs but this one has been popular from nearly day 1 and has been sought out by many as the Key to the Eisenhower Series.
Soon after production of the IKE began, the US Mint realized that the die steel being used could not withstand the higher tonnage required to produce the copper nickel clad coins. Previous full size dollar coins were of 90% silver which is a more malleable metal. Copper nickel on the other hand is much harder. The end result were less than desireable coins. (There have been zero MS67 Ikes graded for 1971 from the Philadelphia Mint and MS66's cost thousands!) So.....the engineers got on the ball and started experimenting with a newer die steel. The end result in this endeavor was the creation of the Type 3 Reverse. 1972 represents the only year where three different coin reverse types were produced under one date at the Philadelphia Mint. All the 1972 coins produced in Denver were of the Type 1 design.
Below is a photo indicating the different Earth types with their different Island configurations for the various Eisenhower "Eagle Landing Reverses".
Note that "Type" directly equates to Reverse Die Variety. (RDV-001, RDV-002, etc.)
For 40% Silver examples of the different types, look closely at the 1971-S (Type 1), 1972-S (Type 2) 1973-S (Type 3) coins. All 1972-S San Francisco produced coins are of the Type 2 reverse. All of the 1971-S Proof coins are of the Type 2 reverse but at least two versions of the Proof with a Type 1 Reverse are known to exist.
So, back to the original question, "what's so special about the type 2?"
Answer: Because of the limited mintages, many collectors search for these and they are not as easy to find as what happened with the OP. He really, lucked out!

Here they are! I bought them from Dave. I hope he doesn't mind me reposting his pics. If so, I will pull them.
I had asked him earlier to sell them to me if he decided not to keep them, because I have been looking for one for a while. He was fair with the price too.
Thanks Dave!
