Anybody else get a kick out of tracking coins as they move around?

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
I've been tracking this one since it was originally made by Don Heath back in May of 2003:

1966 PCGS MS68DCAM SMS Kennedy.

He originally submitted it to NGC and then crossed it over to PCGS. I have most all of the sales recorded in my records, (including one private sale), and know most of the previous owners. It happens to be a coin I would LOVE to own, and if I was rich it would already have been mine.

I enjoy tracking some half dimes and comparing the truth against the version of the truth offered by the sellers.

I have always admired Shylock's ability to track specific IHCs through multiple auctions and often even after the coins were cracked out, doctored, and reslabbed.

That coin is a real moose. I wonder what went through Don's mind when he first saw it (I assume it was raw).

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I like to occasionally track some special piece back to its origin. Right now, I'm identifying original buyers of $20 from the Treasury during the 1930s, and the quantities released to collectors.

It is a 25k coin in todays market, will be a 35k coin shortly. But for the next hour we are going to let it go for the low price of 13k. Yes coinheads you heard that right JUST ONE PAYMENT OF 13K PLUS shipping and handling. If you place your order now we will include a "slap chop" and a set of " sham wow" Just do not rub Kenny's head with a damp sham wow or the dcam will be sucked off.

Russ- Since you have tacked this coin what is the lowest price you have been able to track besides the mint release price of a few bucks.

I like to do it when I can but things tend to disapear on me. image

That's cool that you have tracked that one Kennedy all this time. Who knows maybe someday someone will be desperate and sell cheap and you will finally own it.

I wish I had the ability to keep track of things like that. I can hardly keep track of my car keys.

That is a super nice coin.

Here is part of his write up. Nice of him to offer it so cheaply.

The coin offered is amazing. We acquired it from an individual who just bought it in a major auction. I leapt at the opportunity. This is a $25,000 coin on today’s market, and will be a $35,000+ coin in the not-too-distant future!

I wonder how often you can pick up a $25K coin for less than $17K? Also I wonder what length of time not too distant future is.

Anyway its a beaut. To answer your question no I don't after having seen a 77IHC get hyped to ridiculous prices by a couple of dealers.

I've had fun tracking this Maundy set through a few sales, starting at Heritage and most recently on eBay, doubling in value on the way.

If it is a great coin - why would it change hands so much ?

No. I leave provenance to the big boys.

Hey Russ, there's always the option of debt, and I would call owning that coin justifiable debt.image

Lowest was $9200, which was January of this year in the Heritage FUN sig sale. Every other sale has been over $10K, including the very first sale after Don made the coin.

Tomaska is correct that this is a great coin for the long term. Don't know about his numbers, but the degree of difficulty is such that this is the last example PCGS has graded at this level and it was at least a couple years before that when another was graded. Make no mistake about it, this coin is RARE at this level.

Kranky, I thought it was the nicest 66 Kennedy I'd ever seen, and by a large margin. I always parked my grades with Russ before I submitted, and my notes to him called it a 68 Ucam. It crossed on first pass to PCGS. It has been graded MS68 Ucam/Dcam by two sets of graders on the first pass. Its a looker. At the time, it was a pop 0 at NGC, and pop 3 at PCGS.

There are two PR Roosevelt's I've been tracking for about 5 years. Both have sold on TT and Heritage and Ebay numberous times. I don't think they've found a home yet. They are both Top pops. I'm not sure if they are overgraded, just to risky given the grade, or no serious collectors available. Mr. Tomaska, at one point, had one of them too image

Still waiting for the perfect oportunity image

    BTW, I love track'n em!!

Now the real question is: How many original mint sealed 25 pack SMS cases are still out there?

I remember buying one a year or so back and paid a good premium. I have seen others come up every now and again on eBay.
