I Missed Out on a HUGE Upgrade!

Wow. I was just pawing through ebay and came across this

I had first won it on Teletrade here with the intention to flip it. I put it on eBay as a PQ Rattler and it brought about $750. I made a nice profit and was happy.

I knew it was nice for the grade but am absolutely stunned that it made such a daunting upgrade. Wow, just wow!

pfft. it cannot be the same coin. everyone here knows grade inflation
is just a rumor. to think that a bit of plastic and a piece of paper could
make such a huge difference is laughable. No sane person would
ever participate in a hobby where a coin one moment is worth 750
and then worth 4000 a month later due to a "holder".

I made about 100% on my initial investment in the piece so I'm still satisfied... but an extra $4000 in my pocket would have been mighty nice.

If I remember the coin correctly, it could actually be quite comfortable in an MS65 holder--a low end 65, but a 65 nonetheless. I just never thought I'd have the luck to get the 65 grade when the spread is so huge.

To say nothing of the fact that it looks like someone barfed on the coin and washed some if it off before slabbing it.

I do not care what the holder says. That thing looks nasty.

I wouldn't buy a MS60 1880-S Morgan from that SOB seller, steer clear and don't believe anything you see.

This is the same seller that I bought an 1892s Morgan from, showed it on this forum, and was advised that it was a fake Anacs slab, sent

info to Anacs and they confirmed it as a fake. The seller did allow a return, but did not re-imburse me for return shipping

w/insurance...approx $15 lost...with no apology really....not even a positive feedback for my immediate payment....I watched his auctions to

see if he would re-list it for awhile but never saw it...still..........I won't do business with him again.....sorry for the ramble....dredged up a

Now wait for the next buyer to get a sticker and see it double in price. What is the old saying, once a pig, still a pig even with lipstick?

Whats the opposite of 'You Suck'??? Is it like 'You nitwit for not sending it in yourself, as the jump in price is like just short of 10 fold, and you knew it had a real shot 65 but for some reason or other you just said 'meh, me too lazy', and sell it on ebay for a hefty profit, but in 65 the profit I made on the PQ64 is chump change compared to what its GOING to get, and I REALLY don't want to see the final price on it, but I'm trying to convimce myself I'm happy with what I made, but I don't think it's going to wor the higher the bidding goes on it in a 65 slab that I was sure it could make, but then said the heck with it and......'

Thats just a joke, and I don't mean any kind of personal affront.....but you DID know it would more than likely 65......it's killing me to know why it isn't YOU thats going to make 44 hunnerd dollars... You DID double your money, and if it were me doubling my money, I certainly would have been happy. You owned it since July.....there were no submissions you could have tossed it in with???? No offense in any way...just 'wow' I guess....I'd snap if it were me, but that's just me.
I'll come up with something, eventually.

As RYK said, just because it's in a 5 holder doesn't mean it's a nice coin. There are plenty of six figure coins that I wouldn't want in collection under any circumstances. A 1796 or 7 $ in 5 or 6 comes to mind. The thing had what looked like a thumbprint of Andre the Giant -- when he was eating fried chicken -- on its obverse.

Robert, do you think someone puked or took a dump on the coin under discussion before trying to clean it up?

I'm still trying to figure out how a coin with such a weak reverse strike landed in a 65 holder; where are the feathers?

I'm not a fan of that kind of toning, but since you and PCGS have both seen the coin in hand and thought it nicer than the rattler grade, I'll defer to you regarding the coin. I'm sure its got 5 luster in hand. Since you bought it to flip it, sorry you missed the big bump. Looks like a good $4000 bump.

    I suspect shill bidding...

Are you sure that's a PCGS holder and not a knockoff?
BTW, I agree that it's butt ugly!
Also, it could be a shill bid.

Butt ugly. I don't like most of his Peace dollars. And what's the point of providing lots of photos if they all suck?

The leap from 64 to 65 for the '23-S is very unusual. I've tried it with some very PQ 64's on the advice of dealers and always failed. I just never tried it with a really ugly, badly toned one.

Yeah... bought an error for $100 tossed it on ebay for .99c and it went $225.

The buyer listed it for $1950 OBO and fished and hooked a buyer at $750... I was in shock! image

If you look up the cert number on the rattler at pcgs it says that number is not available for viewing.
I guess that means the coin was submitted as a regrade?

My guess too. Either that, or a crack out and the original cert was later returned. I usually collect the loose certs and give them to a dealer-friend to send them back to PCGS or NGC. Don't they give you 50 cents a cert, or something like that?

It's my understanding that PCGS is very tight these days - and I hear that a lot ...........

So in that environment , with a coin most say has below average eye appeal .....

how did it get a bump up in grade ??

I remember it actually had a pretty nice look in hand. The luster was very thick and creamy and I actually liked the toning.
