Is there a popular coin/series you just don't get?

I don't mean SBA's or some of the other obviously less desirable coins. But how about something widely collected? Like Washington quarters, Lincolns or CBH's...something that simply leaves you flat?

Personally, I've tried really hard to love some of the Barber coins, but I'm just too ill bred to appreciate them, I guess. What don't you get?

CBH's don't do it for me. Had quite a few over the years and just can't seem to keep them.
Good fodder to sell for my CC's.

Morgan Dollars.

Most tables at the shows are full of them and the pop reports have some huge numbers of these. Lots are very common and I don't really think it's that great of a design... but apparently many folks love 'em...

Meanwhile, I hunt the shows for the hand full of mint state Barbers that I can find

My second answer: VAMs.

Most of them are way too subtle for a crude individual like me.

I know alot of people collect them and they're a real challenge but I just don't get Barber coinage either.. Ms Liberty looks like a man and the reverse looks like a chicken. That being said... I've been looking for a decent XF-AU un-messed with or un-damaged Barber Half for nearly two years...Oh... at a reasonable price

This'll probably get me some heat but I just bought the full run of Franklins
and don't think I've looked at them since I put them in the Dansco.
Don't really know why.

I have to say it but I know many of the members in this forum considers it heresy. I cant stand the design of Morgan dollars. I bought one in a GSA holder, got it home, and thought what did I do.... I sold it shortly there after for a small loss just to free up cash. They say "to each his own". My own wants nothing to do with Morgan dollars.

I've never cared for the MPLs. Yes, they're rare but I can hardly tell the difference between a Mint State and the Matte Proof so what's the point?

I thought the profile on Barber coins was a man for decades. I can understand collecting the coin if you view the profile as a man. As a woman, it's hard to understand.

Morgans are also hard for me to understand from a design perspective. Toners and DMPLs can stand out and are easier to understand.

I have to admit, I am not a fan of the buffalo nickel. The design is over used and become main stream. Don’t get me wrong the right coin right etc. the buffalo can be pretty, but it just does not ring my bell.

Pretty much all of the above that have been listed so far, except Barber coins. I think Barbers have a nice clean, uncluttered, "purist" design about them, numismatically speaking.

Another area of collecting that I can't relate to is "counter stamped" coins as well as love tokens. To my untrained taste, they are just damaged goods, but I still respect others' right to enjoy and collect them. Different strokes, ... etc.

I have to second the mention of Morgans. They never floated my boat, either.

As for an unpopular series - trimes. Too small. then again, I think half dimes are interesting - so I am not too consistent.

While I do not collect them myself, I certainly can appreciate the dynamic world of moderns - so I don't want this to be perceived as a bashing post.

Truly, however, what I do not get, is how some slightly lower mintage modern coins come to command big premiums - the 2001 Sac comes to mind...

I don't really know why, but I have never been able to get excited about the Peace Dollar. It is the one series in my dollar collection, I never seem to get around to upgrading.

As a series, the three cent nickles. A friend of mine calls them the Roosie dimes ofthe 19th century.
As an individual coin, the high/ low leaf quarters. Contrived rarity IMHO...

I find that the more research I do the more I can fathom why someone has and interest in collecting a popular series. The one exception to that is Roosevelt dimes. The coins are small, have a totally uninteresting design and are common coins. Even as kids in the 50's I don't recall anyone I knew that was collecting coins had any interest in them. I've always looked at them as coin for the numismatically lazy and for those who like to pour over hundreds of them just to find a certain grade. Listening to collectors talk about them has to be similar to attending an AAA meeting.

I will also add that I have a hard time appreciating Barber coinage and Three Cent Silver pieces.

I cant say there is a series I just dont get or like to one degree or another. So let me turn this one around a little

Instead of choosing a series I cant understand why folks like, let me choose something folks dont like. I dont get why folks dont appricate moderns. (yes I know all the reasons) I just find them silly. (the reaons not the persons)

One of the main reasons I collect coins is to study the history surrounding them, the era in which they circulated, the reasons they were minted, how they impacted the daily lives of common folk, etc. It's hard to study the history of modern coins since, by definition, there isn't much.

That said, I still respect those who choose to collect moderns...they are just not for me.

Collect what you like and like what you collect. It's all good.

I have to agree with John. I never have liked the 3 cent nickels too much, and I never have liked buffalo nickels either. The design has never just appealed to me.

Barber is a gal? I too thought dude for years

I never liked the series till I saw a high grade one.
Peace $ are the same way. Morgans don't thrill until 66+in grade

So far on the modern side in any grade, I've never liked sba's, presi bucks, first ladies, boring PC stuff, and sacs,

trimes, 3CN's, sheild 5C's are the MS available classics I can't seem to like either

early, early halfs thru cents are another do to grade.

and yes I'm mainly a blast white relatively original surface type collector for eye appeal.
