    Here's a somewhat dumb question... Were homeland issues (GB shilling, 6d, etc) accepted at par in Cyprus during British occupation? or to what extent did those circulate versus these? The weights and metal content were the same. Just curious since the Cyprus issues are so scarce.

    Gorgeous! Mark is indeed the master. I have my U.S. half cents and British fractional farthings awaiting shipment to him for photography.

    One thing... that 4.5P doesn't match the others; too bland. You need to break out the food coloring! image

    I don't know if British coins were used and/or accepted in Cyprus prior to the issue of these coins. I'm guessing that the gold sovereign and half sovereign were though. These are the first British Cyprus silver coins, I believe that the Indian rupee and its fractions, brought to Cyprus by British soldiers filled the gap until that date. The rupee is approximately the size of an 18 piastres, which is approximately the size of a florin. Shiroh has a more precise list for Commonwealth coins with their weight and silver content.The 3 piastres was a one year type and denomination and was never minted again. The coins must have been delivered a few months after Victoria's death.


    I wish I had the bronze ones too, but I don't. I have instead the first year of issue bronze coins from 1879, significantly easier to locate in red BU than 1901.

    Dan, you are correct about the 4.5P ,although it has a more subtle toning, perhaps not entirely shown in this nice collage. As the coins are individually slabbed, I have no way of telling if they came from the same set or not. Three of them look quite similar, but it's just guessing.
