My get rich quick plan for 2009

While looking for a coin paperweight my son found this web site for promotional items that will sell Morgan’s in plastic for various prices depending on how many you buy. The minimum is #150 at $4.00. He decided that we could buy 150 for $600, cut them out and sell for melt at around $10 for a quick profit of $900! I have to give him credit for a young guy he came up with quite a plan. I have a band saw, all we need is a money man backer. Who wants in, we could retire to the beach in a year or two. The Morgan looks real to me. image

    you can buy a sample one and have it delivered for $19.00 total

    They have a toll free number at the very end of the page....just give them a call. I'm surmising that
    they are manufactured in China and have fake dollars.

    A non-collector friend of mine has a Franklin half encased in one of those things... it looks like it would be next to impossible to get out. Perhaps one could freeze it with dry ice / liquid nitrogen and smash it with a hammer? image

    You can melt it out. I burned out a few silver coins from those toilet seats this past year. Got them at a show for 1/2 of melt becuase no one could figure out a way to get them out. I lit it a fire and it literally burned completely to nothing leaving the silver laying on the ground. I simply picked it up washed off the smut and put it in the 90% bag.

    image That should work too. However I can only imagine how many toxic fumes would be released into the atmosphere, especially if you're melting a few hundred of them at a time. Certainly not something you'd want to do indoors!

    When I started this thread it was only joking around knowing that the Morgans could not possibly be real. After reading some of the posts it made me think about what was being advertised and the legalities of it. As they do not state the coin is a copy, what would happen if you bought them on good faith thinking they were real? If the coin is fake and not marked as such, counterfeiting? What say the lawyers?

    Based on my calculations, I think the product is way too light to contain a real Morgan...

    I compared these 2 products, both of which are resin, appear to be of the same thickness, and presumably made by the same manufacturer:

    Morgan resin paperweight
    Size: 2.75" x 2.75" = 7.5625 sq. inches
    Weight: 200 pcs = 61 lbs. ~ 0.305 lb/ea = 4.88 oz.
    = Approx. 0.645 oz per square inch

    Empty resin paperweight
    Size: 3.0" x 1.5" = 4.5 sq. inches
    Weight: 150 pcs = 30 lbs. ~ 0.2 lb/ea = 3.2 oz.
    = Approx. 0.711 oz per square inch

    Logically, the paperweight with the Morgan inside should weigh more relative to the empty one, but that doesn't seem to be the case. My guess is the "Morgan" dollar coin inside is really just an aluminum copy image

    Silly ol' bear, that doesn't work.

    What you can do is take a stack of 8 bills. Unface then so they are mixed up directions. take the 3rd and 5th from the stack, fold each in half, then put back in place with the folded bills on the end away from your body. Buy an item for 9.99 dollars. Hold the stack out to the gulible vendor, with a solid grip at the center of the stack. Carefully count 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10, and presnt the stack to the vendor. Tell vendor, keep the change. Take items. Make your way away from vendor, sneaking glances back to be sure vendor is not in pursuit. Run like hell when you see puzzled look on vendors face.

    My prediction (with 99.9999% certainty): They're fake (I know, most of you are "Duh!"). But heck, stranger things have happened...besides, it will be my first "Morgan"...

    Maybe it says "COPY" on the reverse, or even better, maybe they will stamp the name of the company you are promoting on the reverse instead of United States of America. It would make a great promotional item for a coin dealer.

    There is NO way these are real coins. Even if they sell you a sample with a real Morgan dollar just to suck you in...you will get copies in the paperweights. Notice the lack of descriptors such as United States, silver, genuine, real, etc.

    I thought there was a small chance this may have been some liquidator who may not have known what they had and was just flipping a finished product, but they quote a production time of 4 days. This means that have to make them and in turn, means they have the "Morgan dollars" already in hand. Unless they picked up a huge stash of real Morgan dollars for near face value and are too idiotic to realize the real value (since they are selling 2500+ for $2.81 each as paperweights), they have to be replicas.

    I have read (and I forget where) that Chinese stuck copies of Morgan dollars in quantity can be purchased in the $1-2 range.

    This is not too good to be true...it's just a carefully crafted advertisement meant to mislead.

    At $4 in quantity, the item is cheaper and more relevant than a mouse pad or some other promo items. Even a calendar is likely going to cost more than $4, and that calendar gets tossed in a year. The down side, is some coin dealers will wince at promoting their business with Chinese made fakes, even if they are encased in lucite.

    This is true. The kid's mind is turning in the right direction. Do what you can to foster that. Tell him a stranger from the internet thought his idea was great and I predict he will be a successful business person some day.
