If this keeps them from going bust or being sold off to some group of faceless investors, why wouldn't you be for it, considering you seem to be such a fan of the brand?

maybe. maybe not. But it should be more aptly wondered if there was ever a time when their stock price was down 80% like it is now? When you need to raise cash, you change your business plan a bit for easy revenue through new sources.

It is obvious that PCGS is simply providing the supply for the demand that exists. Makes good business sense to me.

PCGS has graded quite a few "BU" Presidents that have been released as $1 coins. I remember there for a while where there were quite a few BU George Washington & John Adams available for sale with Presidential Labels out there. Since President Obama doesn't have a US Mint coin yet, this seems to be a great way to commemorate his first year in office. Many people have excitedly purchased this coin already, so it has appeal to many. Not everyone will buy, but yet it is a fantastic way to commemorate our 44th President. IMHO

This in no way reflects upon PCGS's "integrity" as the market leader in professional coin grading. Had each one been graded as "MS70" regardless of its condition (like what some of the competition has done in the past), then it would be an "integrity" issue.
Frankly, I am pleased that these are available and much prefer this over the "paste on" coins being marketed to commemorate this occasion in American history. At least the coin in the slab has real monetary value in the form of bullion silver!
Hopefully, the two I ordered won't get those danged milk spots!

Speaking of beating a dead horse.
I think it became obvious with the Presidents, that the collectors wanted MS65 & above coins for the length of the series. Most MS65s are not that conditionally rare (like MS66 or MS67s), but they're the most affordable way to collect the Presidents. The Presidential Dollar coins are focused as a series & not a commemorative moment easily sold with a Silver Eagle of the same year. Someday President Obama will have a commemorative coin like the Lincoln that is releasing in 8 days, but between now & 100-200 years collectors would like something to display.
Those Lincoln Commemoratives are GREAT! Very exciting new release!

I think most the upset of the new product has to do with the politics and not the business decision. There wasn't much protest for these other products which were just as shamelessly commercial as the new one is.
/edit: Yes, a brief search turns up PCGS slabbed silver eagles with Jessica Lynch, Lance Armstrong, and General Tommy Franks. Very little umbrage taken with any of those, and now a tempest over what is the latest in a long line of such slabs.

Come on, all the talk about buying the coin & not the holder is all BS if you allow the insert to bring out all these emotions.
Don't like it? Don't buy it. Simple.
For those that think this a way for PCGS to ride the wave of what is Barak Obama, more power to them.
I work for the L.A. Times, and you should have seen the lines of people buying pinting plates & newspapers when Barak won the election!
Not only in L.A., but at other newspapers too.
Had we EVER sold printing plates before? Not to my knowledge.
It's business, plain & simple....make money & stay afloat....and I would presume Republicans would be the first to embrace this move, if not the person represented.
As far as lowering their integrity, is it any different than 'sample slabs' or the SAE's they used to give when you joined PCGS (2003-2004 I believe)?
