I have decided to bury my coin collection....

I have decided to bury my coin collection...Even though it is quite modern, I do have a good selection of old coins that will be going in...I am sorry if some of you want my coins, but alas, they are going in, never to be re-treaved !! I am going to list my coins first of all, I will be taking pictures of this process as well....I did research topics here of burying coins, I see a "longacre" stating the same the same thing back in 2005 thread...I wonder if he ever carried it out...??? I doubt it, he sounded to greedy..

Anyway, Here is a list of the coins going in.....
2 sets of entire silver proof state quarters..
4 proof ben frankins proof. ..2 from 63 , 1 from 58 , 1 from 57
4 uncirculaed frankins 58-69-60-61
many proof sets, 1951, 58. 59, 61, 62, 63, 64, 62, 63..
also mint sets 1994,95, 95, 96,97, 97,98,98
1942 ms69 half dollar, 6 unc morgan dollars, 4 UNC peace dollars.. , 1857 MS quarter , au 1900 morgan, au 1903 morgan, 1889 ,1890,1883, 1885 all great condition,.
3 tubes of silver american eagles...2009 being the last...
1843 2 cents? also old nickel and dime..all 1800....tooo many more to list...wait.....1970-1974 silver ikes. in the BROWN BOX, yea, I somehow wanted to justify that series..
many more coins, 1976-1776 siler trio., etc...it;'s all going in..
many more singlw silver state coins, and silver eagles....
I am guessing about 2K-4K worth of coins....I know how I am going to package this...
Yes, I am wanting a "pirates" type of buried treasure here..

my sons dont have a real interest in my coins...so I want to bury them.....I dont have one of a kind pieces, but decent ones....the only thing i am including with this burial is a note stating the barial date. that's it.

I won't miss these coins, as I do love coins, but let mother nature embrace these coins for what they are.....

Except for my gold, I just cant give that away, LO!!

My queastion is WHERE to bury it, by a tree, a rock? I dont want to bury near something that will bulldozed in the future, but public is good....or on a public land, or private?

You might want to rethink your plan.

If you get caught burying all that junk without an environmental assessment, you might be put in the slammer for many years.

50 cents, that coin , is much, much more luster than any coin I have, including all new coins...and brilliant, but i don't care, it should be just as brillinat when someone finds this hoard....

And yes, my name (which i will give my last name only)will be associated with this hoard of some kind..I hope........

If you're burying it as a lot, I suggest double sealing it into foodsaver bags with dessicants and oxygen absorbtive baggies, then placing it into a sealed, nitrogen-purged PVC pipe with lots more dessicant baggies.

I suggest rather than using a landmark that will eventually disappear (e.g., a tree, rock), you consider GPS or a careful set of bearings on landscpae features. If you bury it so deep a bulldozer won't hit it, nobody will ever find it. If you bury in a pretty grassy park, you'd risk someone paving it over for the Big BO monument in 20 years. I suggest just selling it or donating it, buying multiple rolls of buffalo nickels, and silver quarters and just spreading them sparcely across every park and beach you ever visit for the next decade. That'd be more fun for the kids.

Interesting concept, and certainly one I would NOT consider, but, to each their own.

I do have a question however?

Do you want them to be found any time within the next hundred years?

I ask this because that should give you a better idea of where to bury them. There are more than a few
places where they might "never" be found.

Frankly, I think I'd want mine to be found, if I did it. Given that, I would probably pick a spot where I knew
the potential for metal detecting would happen. and I would consider a landmark, unmoveable boulder or
tree as a close spot.

pendragon, well stated post.!! I plan to bury this 2 feet deep. I have already sealed everything in a foodsaver packaging, which i will show photis of soon, also, doubled wrapped in a foosaver. these will also be in a tupperware container to finish the deal......if this isn't good enough, then let the finder care for them.. They should be in pristine condition....if not, then they shouldnt be too bad, considering, the metal detector guys.....or gals, lol...what tehy find typically..

anyway, I will post soon more clues and picks....

A good place for coin burials is the family graveyard, pick out a relative that you know, take a post hole digger, and bury them coins!

I sort of understand....

When I did more metal detecting I felt like I wasn't leaving fun for future hunters. Sometimes I brought a pocket full of wheaties and as I filled in holes from finding modern coins I tossed a wheatie in the hole.

Geo-cache them using a GPS and leave the grand kids the coordinates. They will appreciate it someday.

Select an old tree and start digging. After you have done all your digging, mark the location on the trunk of the tree in some way that looks like an ordinary gouge from nature. Realize that as the years go on the recovery digging will become much more difficult.

I wouldn't bury them - would rather hide them in some older (public) building - t. i. in church 4 example or. in National Library or....in The Capitol Building LOL - and would published a treasure map with puzzels (National Treasure movie style

If you only bury them 2 foot deep I don't think the coins will stay nice that long because of the freezing and thawing.

Trees and rocks get bulldozed all the time. Only safe place to bury would be at the bottom of the bluff where I live.

when putting your treasure in the ground please remember this, put it in a metal box and no more than 12" down that will give people with a metal detector a chance in 100 years.
