Seriously, does anyone really think less of him because he smoked marijuana? It's not like he's smoking crack here...I can see why advertisers would be reluctant to use him now, after all, they are naturally misleading, manipulative and disingenuous, but his achievements at the Olympics are in no way diminished because of this in my eyes...I mean, c;mon now, this is still a very young man we're talking about, and he's obviously been able to maintain his focus and drive to excellence..he's still an American hero, IMO.. >>

He could be mainlining turkey basters full of smack for all I care. All of these sports-- including the four major N. American sports-- should quit jerking around with drug tests for substances that don't improve on-field performance. It's invasive, it's embarrasing, and it does nothing to make the games more enjoyable for the fan; which, ultimately, should be the final litmus test.

I think it was a smart move for them to acknowledge it as a way of nipping it in the bud now.

Instead of escalating to some scandal/rumor/innuendo - Phelps' people know Joe American Sports Fan is too stupid to care [and too quick to forgive and forget] as long as it is someone of Phelps' ilk and not some black eye they like to plaster all over Deadspin.com.

He'll be getting some 'life-coaching' about really being careful when he is around with so many people and will party harder, where there is virtually no opportunity for people to take any sort of picture.

Look, I don't care what Phelps does and I really don't think this whole thing is going to hurt him much. But, to sit here and suggest that we should expect all people his age do these things is simply inaccurate. I know MUCH more was expected of me at that same age.

I'm betting President Obamas parents were very disappointed in him when they found out he smoked a little weed, very disappointed. For sure they would've expected so much more from him.

IOC accepts Phelps' apology for marijuana photo

The International Olympic Committee expressed confidence Monday that Michael Phelps will learn from his "inappropriate behavior" and continue to serve as a role model after a British newspaper published a photo of him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at last year's Beijing Olympics, apologized and acknowledged "regrettable behavior" after the picture was published Sunday by the tabloid News of the World.

"Michael Phelps is a great Olympic champion," the IOC said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press on Monday. "He apologized for his inappropriate behavior. We have no reason to doubt his sincerity and his commitment to continue to act as a role model."

During the Beijing Olympics, IOC president Jacques Rogge called Phelps "the icon of the games."

Marijuana is viewed differently from performance-enhancing drugs under World Anti-Doping Agency rules. An athlete is subject to WADA sanctions only for a positive test that occurs during competition periods.

The News of the World said the picture was taken during a November house party while Phelps was visiting the University of South Carolina.

The party occurred nearly three months after the Olympics while Phelps was taking a long break from training, and his actions should have no impact on the medals he won in. Beijing.

He has never tested positive for banned substances and the case is unlikely to fall under any doping rules.
