All these Dollar Coins Are Confusing!

It sure is confusing having soooo many dollar coins lately (Sac, Sac Native Reverse, Pres, ASE), and so many Washington coins (All State Quarters, WA State State Quarter, Territories & DC, Dollar, Satin, Pos A, Pos B, Martha)!

I almost posted a totally wrong rant about an e-bay auction claiming a low pop because I looked up the wrong 2007-P dollar in the pop reports.

While I am glad our coin designs have changed and brought new interest, there is such a thing as too much. We have a jar of coins this year without going beyond the standard circulation strikes with 10 dollars, 12 quarters, and 8? Cents.

The threat of oversaturation looms. Stamp collecting started its tumble in this country when the USPS started issueing 100's of different stamps each year. It was simply too much for collectors to keep up with. Stamps are easy to store and do not need much room. Imagine how much space a coin collector will need in a few years if he/she is trying to maintain a complete basic modern mint collection, lets not even get into the varieties emerging! Even the type collector that tries to focus on one nice coin for each type will be under the gun!

..........just wait till 2010, brian. if CCAC has anything to say about it we MAY have another reverse on the prez buck!

Same thing happened to baseball cards......overproduction and to many "mini" sets were produced, which ultimately killed the hobby.

I have to say we are very close to that as well.

While the state quater program was fun, now we have quite a few others in the works. If we go the forest quarter route, pres buck, cent and sac, its going to get a tad bizaare.

Complain to Congress. They are the ones requiring this, not the Mint.

In the old days the government would have been concerned about counterfeiting with so many dollar designs around. Back in 1873-4, one of the mint directors was concerned about the fact that there were two sizes of gold dollars in circulation. He called it "an evil." As a result he pulled in as many type 1 gold dollars as possible and had them melted and recoined into type 3 dollars. That's why the mintages are high for 1873 and '74 gold dollars.

Today the government only cares about the fact that these dollars are going aginst the national debt. Otherwise they don't care because no one uses them any way.

I consider myself a coin collector
and I can't keep these in my long term memory storage area,
or my short term area either.

That's part of what I mean. I am a serious collector, mainly enjoying older coins... but also dabbling in the new. If I get confused, how is John Q keeping up?

I used to like to take nice examples of business strikes from circulation every year but it is becoming a chore at this point. A complete set each year used to be a P and D example of a cent, nickel, dime, quarter, half, and dollar if they were being minted for circulation. That's 10-12 coins per year. If I wanted a P and D example of each coin struck for circulation I would have to get:

8 cents
2 nickels
2 dimes
10 quarters (is that right?)
2 halves (maybe but not likely to be struck for circulation)
10 dollars

That's 30-32 coins of which 10-12 I will never see in circulation.

Halves and dimes are the only denominations yet to be touched by the madness. I have stopped collecting quarters and dollars altogether, truth be told. I no longer try to keep up with new issues.

Back in 1873-4, a dollar was real money. Today, it barely buys you a can of Coke from a vending machine.

John Q. Public doesn't care.

Niether do a lot of coin collectors, including me. If these dollars weren't part of the annual Proof sets, I won't have any of them in my collection.
