"...5. With much of the stuff being sold without holding it in your hand (ebay/internet), I question how valuable it will be for prospective buyers..."

    .............

Light almost always makes the roaches run away.

If newbies are educated, they will be afraid to buy non-slabbed material.
Once a large segment of the market knows about the frauds, it will
become more difficult for the crooks to profit.

If the site/manual is properly promoted, the story will be in the mainstream
media quickly. KO would love to have somebody to interview on the subject.

Such public exposure will encourage EBAY to knock it off. EBAY almost
single-handedly killed stamp collecting - turned it into sticker collecting -
because nobody was ringing the alarm loud enough until it was too late.

What was the deal with ebay and stamp collecting?

I have inherited my father's stamp collection, but have never really looked through it to determine its value or anything and would be curious to know any info about the ebay problems before checking information on "sold" items
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • How the heck would you reseal a rack? I just cant see how it is possible with the thin wrapping and dividers inbetween the 3 stacks.I guess if there is money involved anything can be done.I think the worst are loose vending boxes.Ive bought plenty from 1980,1977,1983 etc and would you believe I got none of the key cards at all.I wouldnt think you would have to reseal old racks and cellos because of the collation of the cards.people cherry pick the boxes and know which to keep.A funny story about blaster boxes, I went to target and couldnt resist one more goudey blaster so i bought it.I got home the shrink wrap had the bottom missing and all the packs were already opened. Some people are just scum, thats staling basically. So if you buy these retail box check the outside very very carefully and make sure the wrapping has the card manufacture logo on it not just some generic wrap.I also know someone who got a wad of newspaper inside a blaster.I hate these people so much
  • Racks can be resealed 2 ways that I know of. One is more simpler than the other. I think they would reseal them to pull high grade and insert a star on top to get 3x or so normal value.

On Blasters- Yes look at the wrap. I have another corcern with these but afraid to post it here publically. Unsure if it could work as I have never tried. PM me?

    Fakes and Forgeries On EBAY

    .............

The technology is such that absent help from high-end experts - like those that do PSE work - it is not
    safe to buy expensive stamps.

EBAY has allowed "replica" - read: COUNTERFEIT - stamps to be sold on its site for YEARS. The items
started leaking into the real market in 1999 and are now everywhere.

Once a fake changes hands once or twice, it becomes real. Amateurs get burned and exit the hobby
    FAST; never to return.

I know some things about stamps. I would NOT buy any unslabbed stamp on EBAY. I don't even
trust the certificates with photos; I would ONLY buy slabbed stuff and break it out.

There are fakes of cheap stamps and expensive stamps on EBAY. I think of ALL of them as stickers.

    ........

A similar circumstance will come to cards, as soon as the tech becomes a bit better.

I don't feel the need to defend myself anymore. Why would I want to share this? So everyone can just poke fun of it. No thanks

Didn't Mark Murphy already do this?
    Good for you.
  • Are you doing some kind of "test" for the book/blog/articles you are writing? It seems you went from counterfeit packs to counterfeit cards. Your intent is becoming a bit questionable.

It's too late, Fandango has already added you to his "LIST" and I'm pretty sure he has his eye on you.

  • << <i>I consider myself a fairly savvy individual when looking at wax packs, and being able to spot whether a pack as been resealed or altered in anyway. I am creating a book right now that points out what steps to look for when dealing with a questionable wax pack.

My question is, is it possible to reseal a rack pack without visual evidence of tampering? I would love to add this kind of info in my book. I have been asked many times in regards to racks and cellos. This way I can pass out my findings to all CU members. If there is a method and how to spot it. I would be very interested in finding out how it is done. This way I am more educated and I will look more thoroughly at a rack before I purchase it. Plus I can add the facts to my book as well.

If you could please PM me directly if you do know the way/ways these packs get resealed. You will be a huge help in educating CU’s members. Like I said if you could just please PM me any info instead of posting it to the thread. I would hate to see that kind of info in the wrong person’s hands.

    Thanks >>

I could write the book and you could just put your name on it.

I got arrested for pot back in 1986

just in case some troll wants to mention it.

    Steve

    Good for you.
  • I am going to assume that the OP paid his debt to society and there is nothing here to be gained at this point in time in airing dirty laundry.

    I'm not hiding anything.

Just have a hard time trusting people that lie.

I'll take it down now because I don't want to accuse him of something like this.

    I apologize.

Edited to add....I have taken part in many group rips and got screwed by Gary. Just a little skeptical of people now.

Digdug how would you like if someone exposed whatever dirty laundry that may be in your closet
from when you were 19? cmon man.

    Steve
    Good for you.

    Steve,

I don't have dirty laundry. I try to be a productive, ethical member of society.

Be grateful then Digdug because I'm sure it is simply because you did not get caught.

Or are you saying that you jave never done anything wrong??

Want to out him for something hobby related by all means do it, to drag up an arrest
record (one which I may add) you are not 100% sure it was even him IMO was lame.

The kid was 19 for chrisakes for that alone you should have cut him some slack.

    Steve

    Good for you.

    Make it a love story....

  • I don't usually stick up for people, but the guy is at least asking for a honest answer for his book. (???maybe???) its all ways better to be sure than make crap up. I'm sure there have been quite a few of us that has been screwed over before and and John is just trying to help people out. Take the Farve thing for an example, if he knew about the counter fit thing, i'm sure he wouldn't of bought it. now he knows and i'm sure he won't buy another one.

John, ask if your not sure.

Oh, please.. If you don't have any dirty laundry, you haven't lived much.

I was arrested back in the day as well. Back when I was around 21, I beat the heck out of 3 guys that jumped me one night over a girl, and I got arrested and charged with assault. Later is was all disposed of by a good lawyer. Lesson learned, and I realized I had to calm down quite a bit when I got married, started a family, and got saved. I have not been in any trouble since, but we all have flaws/skeletons from our past. No one is perfect, that's for sure.

    I'm quitting the hobby.

Me neither, unless you count all those times I sold dope disguised as a Nun.
  • Geez if we are throwing out the dirty laundry,

08/1991 - DUI & minor under the influence
    02/1995 - Aggravated Assault
11/21/1996 (my birthday) - Assault & Battery (Don't mess with the skinny guy crouched in the ninja pose)
02/1999 - Illiegal use of a weapon (Do not shoot a .22 in city limits)

  • .. image

Bill that doesn't even qualify as a dirty pair of shorts compared to my record. Although you seem like an angry person. image

5 counts, Break and Enter with theft (the buildings were kind of abandoned, and I was 16, and we were drunk.
5 counts, Possesion of marijuana, one with intent to traffic.
3 counts, Drunk driving, that's a Hat trick.
    1 count, Driving while prohibited.
1 count, Speeding. Strangely this is on my record???

And I only spent 97 days in jail. image

I should be ashamed of all that but I don't care, it's not who I am now, but it's a part of me forever. image

  • << <i>And I only spent 97 days in jail.

Only a couple hours each time for me. I'm obviously not ashamed either. I won' be running for president any time soon.
  • There is two nightcrawlers on the CU....maybe I am the only one that was confused by that.

I have to agree with the last few posters, if you have a spotless record, it is unlikely you have lived life. At the same time, if you have a list longer then Nightcrawler...you should likely slow down. image

Only have one thing on my record, Possesion of marijuana. I was raided several years ago because of having scales, baggies and the like everywhere. This despite the fact I had a real non-drug reason for all of it (selling meteorites, which we cut into small pieces and weight by the gram) and had not done anything to anyone. And no, I'm not bitter about it. (Okay maybe a little).

I was also a runaway for much of my later teen years...but I guess just got lucky and never got caught doing anything.

Edit to add: I also filed bankruptcy about 10 years ago for hospital bills. Not that bankruptcy is something to be ashamed about now days, but in the past, it would likely be viewed different.
