Thoughts on this large cent?

My pictures really highlighted a lot of flaws on this coin, but in my dansco type set it looks very nice.
I'm not sure what the gunk is one the reverse... It did not toothpick off very easy. I suppose I should soak in acetone?
Does it look original? I really do not know anything about big copper except I need a few for the album.

This is one of the first pieces of copper I bought for my set a couple years back. I had just gotten around to imaging it today. It really does look nice in hand. It's chocolate brown without most of the gloss that jump out in the pictures.
It's amazing sometimes you just can't see a coin for what it truly is until you take a decent closeup shot of it.
I will keep my eyes out for an original upgrade.

This is one of the MOST TRUE comments I have seen on the boards for a long while. I've noticed it myself...more than I would want.
Sometimes, a good picture will exaggerate small dings/marks, but many times, they will show what the eye has trouble with (due to angle/lighting/whatever).
I've had "slightly marked up" coins that showed cleaning with a photo (that, in hand, not myself nor some dealers had seen the cleaning like that) and even more.
So, I take photos of most of the coins. The good ones I keep to showcase the coin when it is sold/put away, but even the other ones (off color/poor lighting/etc) I still look at so I can more easily discern stuff about the coin that I may have trouble seeing with my eyes...even with a loupe. 3 cent silver pieces come to mind for that
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Roger that! I take blow up photos with an Ott light for sales on the BST forum, and it's amazing the minute 'issues' I don't notice with a 5X magnifier that become evident in the digital photos. But I've also had people say the coins look better when they get them in hand than they do in the pics, which is much better than people being disappointed when they get the coins!
PS - I also agree with the comments about readily replacing this coin with a nice original one for a reasonable price if you choose to. When you get to that Classic Head cent though, watch out. A Classic Head cent with an appearance like the braided hair cent posted would be an upgrade for most everyone's 7070 sets!

Late date Braided Hair Large Cents are plentiful and inexpensive. Suggest getting a better example of the series.

I agree 100%. I think it looks just fine!
It makes me sad to hear everyone putting down this coin (or others) because of what may, or may not have, been done to it in the past. It is still a 160+ year old piece of history and I don't mind the look of it. To some of the comments on here (i.e. "obviously cleaned", "it's a dog", "you can do better", etc) I say "SO WHAT"!
Not everyone can afford MS70 of Prooflike pieces. If a coin has wear and is only VG because of it, isn't it still the same coin, made at the same time? I realize it's worth less, but this "Cleaned" lable just goes way too far some time. Good Grief!!! Not all of us are dealers. Some just collect for fun. As if it were a "Hobby" or something.
And don't even get me started on toning. (OK, too late) It seems now that about half the coins that show any toning at all illicit comments like "Obviously AT", or such. How can you be so sure? Coins used in circulation are subjected to a near infinite number of environmental situations and those that have been stored for some time are stored in an equal number of different environments. And if one DOES have "questionable toning", once again "SO WHAT"? If you like it, fine. If not, fine. I just don't like everyone telling me what I should or shouldn't like.
Sorry, but some of you guys are sucking the fun out of collecting coins.

My opine on this coin - it is not a nice coin
VF20 to F12 for bigtime, obvious cleaning to VG10 for dings - avg- at the extreme best
You can get a really nice 1848 in VF20 for 50-60 bucks (new CQR) - not a fortune
Strip it and start over if nothing else
