New Addition to my Set of Capped Bust Half Dimes

BarndogBarndog Posts: 20,525 ✭✭✭✭✭
I picked this coin up at the FUN Show a few weeks ago. Just got the word from Mark Goodman that images were done. I saw this coin in the case of Pinnacle Rarities on Wednesday afternoon. It was part of the "Sounder Type Set" and was one of the few coins in that set marked "NOT FOR SALE"

It was love at first sight for me. I liked the coin so much, I never attributed its die marriage when I picked it up on Wednesday to view. I just marveled at the surfaces, preservation, and neat color. I looked at it two separate times on Wednesday, plus brought my brother and friends to see it too, it was that nice. On Thursday, I went by to visit the coin another couple of times. Showed it to even more friends too. Wednesday and Thursday I didn't buy any coins for my half dime set, it was looking bleak. On Friday (my last day at the show), I went by to view it again in the morning. I decided to hand one of the nice people at Pinnacle Rarities my "business card" and asked if the coin ever was for sale if they might give me a call. I was told the owner was likely on a flight at the time, but they would be happy to call him later in the day. Cool, I thought, shoot me down sooner rather than later. Anyway, about three hours later I got a call -- the coin WAS FOR SALE. I dropped what I was doing and hurried over to Pinnacle Rarities and started writing a check before I was even asked if I was OK with the price quoted during the phone call. Rational exuberance, at least I thought so. Anyway, I bought the coin and showed it to the few people who I hadn't dragged over to the Pinnacle Rarities table to view it earlier. I left the bourse for a break, then finally sat down outside the bourse to attribute the coin. I really didn't care what die marriage it turned out to be, I was buying it because it was a stunning example of a capped bust half dime. The obverse was easy enough to recognize. That obverse centering dot is the sign of an 1830 LM-8 (common) or the rarer 1830 LM-6 (an R-5, but a "soft" one I think). Didn't matter to me, I would be happy with whatever the reverse told me. Turned it over and noted that the second S in STATES was well to the right of the S in PLURIBUS -- Score! It is the 1830 LM-6, the R-5 die marriage. And yes, there is a reverse centering dot too, kind of cool. A fortuitous cherry pick. I will soon add this coin to my Registry Set (see my sigline).

Lovely coin. What kind of money does it cost to get nice photos like that?

Barndog, I love these posts. The suspense, the spectacle, etc.

I also love not knowing what variety a certain coin is until I get to my books and find out that it's rare.

Super congrats and awesome addition image
