I finally decided to attempt to get my wife involved in my passion for coins. Ever since I got the "bug" it has been very difficult for her to understand how I could spend thousands of dollars on a quarter. To her coins have a face value and that's it. I came home yesterday from our local bank with $50.00 worth of nickels (cant seem to find half dollars in rolls anymore) and we started to sort them. In the lot we found 5 war nickels and 1 buffalo (1926 VF). I then shared the approximate value with her and she seemed pleased with our find. I think the "bug" is going to pass her by, however, one never knows. I figured Id share this experience with other married collectors that may have the same issue.

Have her start a collection of diamond rings and gold necklaces worth a couple thousand each. She will understand the value perfectly and catch the bug. The problem is, you won't.

I took my wife to the Long Beach Coin show to try to get her interested, she hated it and just wanted to leave. The only thing she likes about my collection is the gold and white gold (silver) coins in it.

Mine's the same. Anything to do with shiney stones and gold and she's in heaven. She even talked me into going to those mines digging on your own. An ok time but not the same as a show of coins.

The only coins my wife likes are those attached to bezels. Preferably gold...

Much like my passion for highpower rifle competition, my wife will never have an in depth understanding of coin collecting. Her understanding of it is that it's something that I enjoy.

I suppose it would be nice to share a hobby with your spouse, however, I fail to see the passion for converting spouses or others to one's hobby.... I continually see threads about bringing 'new' people into the hobby, or wives or children. One should understand that hobbies are a unique endeavour, an interest of the individual.
This is like picking out your childrens spouse and career... leave them alone. Those who have an interest will become a part of the hobby, those whoi do not, will have another interest. Cheers, RickO

There is still hope. Often what is depicted on coins is what gets people interested.

At some point the the Mint make issue something that catches your wife's interest.
Heck maybe pick her up an Australian coin perhaps that will entice her.

The passion for coin collecting is not something that is "Learned".

You either have it or you don't.

But, there sure isn;t anything wrong with checking!

I agree 100%. Let them pick their own interests and hobbies.
How would you like it if your wife tried to get you interested in collecting shoes and purses?

If they had a couple of Bourse tables at Anthropology my wife would spend about two seconds glancing on her way to the spring sweater rack, but only to make sure there weren't any Edwardian Platinum rings in the cases.
