Another PCGS vs NGC scenerio......

I saw the note on PCGS vs NGC* (with star). Just curious about two more scenerio:

1) Which would you rather have, a PCGS (no CAC) or a NGC with CAC sticker and why?

2) Has any assessed success of crossovers to PCGS on NGC with CAC versus the the success rate of crossover NGC without CAC? Qualitative comments accepted.

I'd rather have the coin that I thought looked the best, regardless of stickers or TPGs.

Or are we talking about the same coin in different holders?

For the coins I do, (2) would be impossible as you cannot establish a control. I cross what I think prudently should cross, CAC or no CAC. And I only d this for future marketability. Personally, the drift I have witnessed over the past 15 years or so from nice coins in variable holders to variable coins in the right holder is disturbing.

It's impossible to answer the first question. Was the PCGS coin rejected from CAC or not sent to them? Buy the coin, forget about all the stupid holders, stickers, holograms, etc.

All things being equal I'll take the NGC CAC over the no CAC PCGS if and only if CAC rejected the PCGS coin. If they simply didn't review it, I'd change my mind. Again, all things being equal.

a coin stands on it's own merits irregardless of what kind of plastic it's sitting in ..........

From a marketability standpoint, I would venture to say the same coin in a PCGS holder would sell for more. The CAC sticker is a nice plus but in the real market, adds little to no value. But from a collector standpoint, if I were on the buyer end and buying it for myself, the holder would not matter. I own both NGC and PCGS graded coins, and know as well as anyone that side-by-side, the PCGS coin is usually better at the same grade level.

If someone asked me to choose - sight unseen, to choose between say a MS 64 NGC Morgan and a MS64 PCGS Morgan, I would choose the PCGS coin every time.

How is that for an answer?

I'd rather have the PCGS coin, because it would save me
the trouble of peeling off the sticker and cleaning off the
residue with Goo-Gone.

Although quoted above, it needs to be quoted again. It's all about the coin, not the plastic.

The more I see these questions posted on the forum the more I see the TPGs have won the war. They are in control of the marketplace, not collectors and dealers.

I'd always rather have the non-CAC coin regardless of which holder it's in. CAC is merely a way to market less than stellar coins that are technically a certain grade.

I was at a small regional show recently (where it seems you usually have less kool-aid drinking) and i overhead a dealer looking at some coins given to him to view. As he made his way through the box, he looked at each coin and commented ("nice PCGS there......sweet NGC......etc.) I almost threw up in my mouth a bit. Never did he comment on the coin itself.......sad

Quite frankly, I think most folks here know that, but it is also pretty much an indisputable fact that TPG plastic and stickers add an extra measure of value to an otherwise nice coin. The question then becomes HOW MUCH extra value do those things add?

Trust me----- the coin is the coin----- if its nice and graded properly -----you don't need a cac sticker!!!!!! BUY THE COIN - NOT THE HOLDER OR STICKER! There are to many collectors that should't be collectors if you don't have any idea of what quality for the grade you collect is!

Interesting FatMan. I disagree with you....

. In no way can the TPG"s control the market. They can influence the market by the way they assign grades and that is about it. The market is controlled by the collector with his amount of money he is willing to part with for a certain coin. If collectors all of a sudden decided to spend less money on a certain coin where would the market go? Down of course. Collectors need to learn to disreguard all of the negative influences that are throw at them in this hobby. IE....Promotions, Fads, Poor Grading, Hype and so on. Collectors have control but only if they sieze the control.

I love how everyone always says buy the coin not the plastic. Why not just by raw coins, you are certainly buying the coin then unless it's housed in a really nice 2x2.
