Would doing a no reserve ending this weekend be a "death wish?"

I would imagine that it depends on the particular coin.

Oddly enough, I have had a few fixed price auctions that didn't sell, and then I said "What the h e doublehockey sticks" and threw them up with no reserve and started them at a buck and what do you know - they sold for more than the fixed price was. Go figure...

I did it. My guess is that the folks bidding on my auction are not the folks buying up UHR's.

I actually did this with a Sirius sat radio last weekend. I had it listed the week before with a BIN of $22.00 and no one hit it, so I threw it up at no reserve and it sold for $56.00. image I bought it for $1.89 when the local Circuit City store was at 95 percent off while closing down. image

I know it is not coin related, but I figured it was a similar instance. image

I think the level of interest in the UHR on this board is not indicative of the general public's interest.

I do this all the time. My auctions start at $.01. Once you have several bidders others come along and heighten interest. My low ball BIN's just don't work. If the coin sits there for days without a single bidder it is unlikely to sell.

I don't do e-bay, but I've attended a number of coin auctions over the years. You're right; if a couple of people like a coin, especially collectors -- not dealers -- they can bid it up more than they could buy said coin from a dealer. I've been involved in bidding wars for coins; if two people think said coin has "their name on it," someone will pay big bucks for it.

I've had auctions with a starting bid and BIN. Someone will bid and the BIN will go away and the winning bid ends up being more than the BIN was.

I've tried BIN as well, with so-so results.

List the same coin at auction & it will usually go for more than the failed BIN.

    Go figure. image
