I was wondering if I could get some answers to a couple of questions I have about
American Precious Metals Exchange (APMEX.com)

The questions:

Have any of you bought coins from APMEX other than bullion related stuff?

What do you think of the pictures they have with the coins they're trying to sell?

Are they scans or pictures?

Have you ever asked them to email you a better picture so you could decide to buy a high priced coin?

Yes, raw large cents and half dimes and a PCGS certified Liberty Nickel here.

What do you think of the pictures they have with the coins they're trying to sell?

They're generally pretty good, but look out for the disclaimer, "This is a stock photo. We have multiples of this item in stock, and the coin you receive may differ from the picture." I wouldn't buy any of those items, personally. You want the ones that say, "this is the exact item you will receive."

Are they scans or pictures?

Don't know, but I have found them to be good enough.

Have you ever asked them to email you a better picture so you could decide to buy a high priced coin?

Yes, and they did it promptly, within a day. You get "first shot" before the photo gets posted on the web.

Overall, I like APMEX quite a bit, except for the stock photos and their high shipping charges.

Have had many transactions with them. Have not bought numismatic items from them. Phone them and ask questions about items or more pictures. They are easy to deal with and do not try to sell you things unwanted. They have a good return policy. One of the best dealers around.IMO

I think they are a very good source for stuff and would not hesitate to continue to buy from them....never had any problems.

Personally, I will not buy from APMEX ever again.

If you pay with a credit card, they pass the 3% fee's on to you as handling charges.

Yes, some raw Franklins.

Not the best around, but not the worst. I think they are a fair representation of what you
are getting, but be sure to read the item description. Some of the coins have a picture
of a representative example (not the actual coin you will receive, but one of similar quality).

I think they are pics, cuz scans really suck.

No. Nor have I ever bought a higher priced coin from them.

I've also bought a few items from them, but their shipping costs are a killer!! That alone has stopped me from buying a lot of items from them. I think its a little obscene to charge $10 shipping for one $100 pcgs coin

Oh but i did love the coins that they sent me!!!

Might be because they also sell low margin bullion and have to do it there but made it a general policy.

I bought from them once (in 2006). The transaction was quite professional and I would buy again if the coin and the price was right.

A question about the 3% shipping charge. Is this only for credit cards? Is the 3% fee waived if you pay by personal check? The info on their website is a bit confusing to me. It says you get a 3% discount if you pay by cash but is that off the flat shipping charge which is dependent on the total value of order or do they mean the aforementioned 3% fee is waived? I hope this made sense.

Yes ... the additional 3% is not applicable if you pay by cash, check etc.

Agree. Folding that surcharge into the "handling charge" is rediculous. It also indicates that the price stated on the web page is the 3% cash dicounted price.

As a buyer, I don;t like surprises.

They sure do!

The 3% gets tacked on as a "handling charge" if you pay by credit card.

The problem I have is with their usage of the term "cash discount" since the web page advertised price is not "discounted" by 3% if you pay by check as it is surcharged by 3% if you pay by credit card.

BTW: "Payment to The American Precious Metals Exchange must be provided using a credit card, bank wire, certified check, cashiers check, money orders or personal check."

I realize that when a company is dealing with precious metals in a volatile market that some policies must be implemented or else you'll lose your shirt but APMEX also sells individual coins.
