I have TWO complete sets now.... One Canadian Large Cents from 1858 to 1920... and then my Silver Roosevelt Dime set 1946-1964..... I couldn't have finished the Canadian set without the help of 1960NYGiants and that 1907H!! I love my large cents, I think I have well over 400 of them now but only one complete set. Mainly due to the 1858... pricey coin... Todd
...but I HAVE completed some sets in Dansco albums: Indian cents, Franklin halves, Peace dollars, and the Irish predecimal series in the 3 album set (minus the optional extremely rare 1943 florin).
So nyah nyah.

This is an epic thread; thanks for dragging it out, Spoon! I'm even more of a failure than I've ever been, but more at ease with that fate.

I can relate. After giving up on Canadian nickels (never finished that), I've turned my attention to my World Coin Type Set. 83 types and counting, with maybe 50000 types to go. Wish me luck
Hey Paul, nice to see you! Good luck on your newest endeavor. How's the new baby? We just introduced our newest numismatist to the family: Christian Jacob, born December 14, 9 lbs.

Babies, born 7 Oct 2008. Callum was 7 lbs 14 oz, and Finn was 9 lbs 13 oz. So far, it's been great, but also crazy busy. We've got some routines established, so things are getting easier. Their first 6 weeks are just a blur.
Congratulations on your addition. Getting any sleep yet?
And no, Paul, no sleep yet!!! I never knew that having another kid would compound the problems; I actually had half convinced myself that one would help cancel out the other in terms of wants and needs. But not so! It's 10 times more work, at least now (and for the foreseeable future). What is the age difference between yours?

Wow--this is an oldie ....once again I like what I wrote--I feel normal in this loonie bin .
About this failure thingy...it's only on how you arbitrarily define success. My silly husband was getting all gloomy because he did not reach a nice round number of miles that he rode on his bike this year. He did NOT reach 7500 miles. On his bicycle. He ONLY rode 7489 and was disappointed---I had to slap him silly and point out how amazing that was. Husbands. Sigh.
Oh, and more importantly--congratulations on all the new babies!! Someone should start a New Years New Numismatists thread .
<< <i>If you want to complete a set, try Liberty nickels, it's a nice, short, but fun run of coins. I once completed that set, twice, back when you could get the 1885 in good for a hundred bucks, the 1886 in good for $35 and the 12-S in fine for a whopping $45. Then the loser in me kicked in and I sold them after completing them. That was a couple of decades ago and I still ask myself, why did I sell them? So, I have yet another one going, along with a PCGS certified set of George V Canadian 5c. I still want to know, after over two years, where the heck is that darn 1932??? >>
Did you see the 1932 5¢ iccs ms 63 in the most recent CNC auction? It sold for CDN $475 +the juice, which I think is a steal of a deal.
WELL, 1JESTER, I WAS GOING TO SAY THAT I FEEL YOUR PAIN, HAVING NEVER COMPLETED A SET, BUT AFTER THINKING A BIT, I REALIZE I HAVE COMPLETED 3 SETS, ALL IN CHOICE/GEM AT THAT!

Expert, you're right. I guess it's all in how you define the set... Let's see....offhand, I can say that I've completed a one coin set of gold coins of the November Revolution (1830-31) in Poland, which was summarily crushed by the Russians. But not before they were able to mint a set of coins. The ducat is styled after (actually, it's a direct copy using the actual dies of) the Dutch ducat of the time, but with a Polish eagle as a privy mark on the obverse. These ducats are quite scarce, and have appreciated in recent years. I also have a few unique patterns, but I don't think I should count them as "sets". LOL
